Stepping down on Prednisone

My 14 yr old daughter has been stepping down on prednisone and just recently went from 10 to 5mg. Her location of Crohn's right now is in her duodenum. After a few days (Sunday) she was bloated and burping a lot. One thing I noticed with her burps is that they smelled like fermented yeast. (I was a winemaker and that is what the smell reminded me of). We have used GasX with some success. I have also found that she has some lactose intolerance so we use Lactaid milk and I just bought some lactase enzymes for when she doesn't have alternatives. She had a rough night last night with that burning where you would get heart burn. Is this a sign that she needs to be at 10 mg or is it something to do with what she eats. I should also mention that she went to a lock in Sat. evening and stayed up all night and probably ate poorly. She did rest Sunday. Is it possible she has thrown everything out of wack? I have her on Lifeway Kifer with 10 strains of probiotics because I am struggling to find a good one. Any feedback would be great.

Prednisone is a known culprit to trigger acid reflux. I already suffer from GERD, so I take Prilosec and that helps alot. Maybe she could try some over the counter antacid meds (i.e. Zantac or Tagemet) to see if that will help till she is off the Pred.

Oops! Maybe an individual dose of Maalox would help ease the burning. I think by staying up all night it probably kinda threw stuff out of whack for a bit. I usually feel bad if I don't get enough sleep, and it will upset my gut for a few days. Usually takes me a couple days to get back to normal.

I have found that I get heartburn/acid reflux at higher doses of Prednisone and they lessen as the Perdnisone dose gets lower. I take Protonix and that makes a huge difference for me.

I agree about the Protonix. It is the best acid reflux/GERD medication I have ever taken. It keeps me completely under control. I am also weaning my pred. I just went down to 5mg from 10mg and am having no stomach problems. I do want to yell and scream all of the time and have a bad headache and dizziness tongue

If I remember correctly, she was on protonix in the hospital. Yesterday evening she started feeling better and this morning she said she had no pain. We looked at her food diary and she said the common thing was applesauce. So hopefully that helped. What also probably made a difference was that I made an appointment for her to see the GI on Friday. Somehow that seems to happen a lot with kids. I canceled that and asked them to put her back on her other appt after our vacation in Disney next week. She has dropped down to 2.5 mg of pred. today, after my encouragement with her GI instead of going from 5mg straight to zero. I also found an awesome health/organic store that carries refrigerated probiotics and a knowledgeable person running the store who has gut problems. She mentioned a brand of probiotics she orders for herself made by Natren. She said she would order it if I wanted after I check out their product online. It is such a relief to find someone who understands probiotics.
