Really Down.. Liquid diet for 3 weeks now.

I have been flaring for about a month. I have been on a liquids-only diet for three weeks. Oh, how I would love to eat something really good right now.

I went to the ER on Friday, they ran blood tests and took an x-ray, and instead of them admitting me because I was severely dehydrated from vomiting for three days, they said my blood looked fine and sent me home with pain medicine.

I go through this every time I flare... hurt, throw up, lose weight, go to the ER, go to the gastroenterologist, finally they find the inflammation and decide to do something about it.

I have had this awful disease for 13 years, and I have never been wrong when it comes to flares. I know when I'm having one, and it really bites having to wait months for the medical professionals to find it and actually do something about it.

I guess I'm just venting. Don't really know what else to do to get them to listen. I am tired of being sick.

Does anybody else ever feel like this?

Hi Mimik81,

Do you have an appointment with your GI soon? Or maybe even find another GI who will be more proactive! You shouldn't have to endure this!

i know how you feel, i was on a liquid diet for about 7 weeks and i hated it, but the outcome was good as they was giving my bowel a rest so they could operate, so if that is the same for you keep your chin up its worth it in the end! what liquid diet is it, is it modulen ibd ?

I don't understand the liquid diet? why would they make it so you only eat/drink liquids? Im new to CD.... I have really bad flares out of no where my stomach will just start to hurt and before i know it my stomach looks like im pregnant and hurts so bad and then i get bad gas inside and out. I've went to the hospital before because of it but only twice and it was before i was diagnosed because it took 3 years to put a name to it.

what are you symptoms like that you are constantly being admitted and are being forced to be on a liquid diet?

flutterbies: A liquid diet (technically called "enteral nutrition") is an old but effective way of treating Crohn's disease. For unknown reasons, sticking with a liquid diet for several weeks can induce remission. But you need to use special meal-replacement drinks that have all the nutrients you need in a day. It can't be just things like clear soup and fruit juices.

Thats what i was thinking it was clear soup and what not...the requirement for a colonoscopy kinda thing. Why is the liquid diet suggested? Is there specific symptoms, or is it just another option like a last resort?

I'm on the liquid diet for now because it is helping me cope with the symptoms until I can get in to see my doctor this week. For some reason, drinking Boost and Ensures are easier for me to handle. I get really bad nausea with my flares, and drinking liquids aren't so quick to make me want to throw up.

I eat whatever I want when I'm in remission... I just cool it when I'm flaring. I sure do miss real food though!

mimik - I escaped the TPN solution, but in the past few weeks I felt like I begged my GI's office for help. I told them "I really need help!" But my GI was out of town and they wanted me to wait, When they finally agreed to let me see the other GI, it was like they were doing me a favor. I finally took myself to ER too and spent 5 days in there. I hated having to go - it was hard on my daughter too. (Single mom) But, they helped. Sadly, it's a mass dose of steroids, once again, that are helping. I don't think I'll ever get off steroids... It gets SO hard to handle. They went ahead and started me on an SSRI (Celexa) - I am hoping that takes the edge off the anxiety related to constant pain and illness.

Hugs!!! Hang in there. I hope that liquid diet gets you healed up and you can get back to eating whatever you want!!!

Agh!!! They should be admitting you to the hospital, not making you wait!!
I'm so sorry you're going through this...it just doesn't seem right.

flutterbies: In answer to your question about why a liquid diet might be suggested, it depends on the patient. It can be a last resort if nothing else works, but some people prefer it to other treatments for Crohn's because it can be as effective as steroids without the side effects. It works best for people with small intestinal disease or mixed small and large intestinal involvement, and least well for those with disease in the large intestine only (some of the latter will still respond, but the odds are less good).

I know how you feel!! I was pregnant when it happened to me. I kept telling my GI it was my Crohn's and he didn't want to treat it. He said I had a virus. So I switched GIs, and i couldn't have made a better choice. The only problem was I waited a little to late, and by the time I switched, the medication My new Dr. put me on didn't help. So I had a PICC line with TPN(after a week of not eating), then finally got to have some liquids, and then a soft mechanical diet. I had chicken and dumplins blended up for Thanksgiving. Sounds gross, but at the time it was oh sooo good!! LOL. But I think that truely your the only one that knows your body best, and you need a Dr. that understands that!! Hope everything goes well.
