I feel pretty lucky to work in an office building that has a women's bathroom with 9 stalls.  For the most part when I need to go, there's a space for me - and even better, I'm usually in there alone...occasionally maybe one or 2 people will be in there with me but usually I'm alone.  And there are at least 50 women in my building.

Anyway, this morning I was feeling OK until 8:10am when all of a sudden an attack hit me.  I headed to the bathroom and cha-ching! I'm alone.  Whew!  Trapped gas pains then a sick LBM with the shakes and sweats were overtaking me...ya'll know what I'm talking about.  Then it got so painful I started dry heaving (thank goodness I hadn't eaten anything yet or else the 'ol plastic bag in my pocket was going to have to be used).

JUST as the dry heaving and the sick LBM was subsiding, I hear someone walking into the bathroom.

Of the now 8 stalls left, which stall do you think this woman chose to go in?!  I'll give you only one guess. smilewinkgrin eyes mad

Doesn't ANYONE know bathroom stall etiquette?!  GEEZ. tongue

OMG, I totally know what you are talking about (feeling and the etiquette).

My office has 5 stalls. It drives me nuts when people don't use every other. If I'm in 1 use any stall but #2. There seems to be a preference for stalls 2 and 4 though. There is canister lighting over 1, 3, and 5. I guess people prefer not to be under a spotlight when doing the business.

oh no that sucks... Everyone knows you should skip at least one stall or more if possible... I have only 2 stalls at my current job and I pray I will be alone the whole time. Karen

I really don't understand why people do that...it's not like it's the prime area to socialize. Perhaps you should make it really loud next time so they might think twice about using a stall next to anyone.

I think we all are a bit sensitive when it comes to our bathroom time don't you agree??? I can't go if someone is in there:( So sometimes when I have those bad emergency cramps and need to go and someone is in there, I suffer until they leave. Or if someone comes in in the middle of my job, I will cramp up until they leave. Some days it can be quite a painful adventure.

I hate those people who decide the bathroom is the gossip center or even worse time to refresh ALL their makeup. Grrrr!!!

My girlfriends know not to continue to talk to me when we're going into the bathroom at the same time.  If we're talking while going in, stop talking to me once we're in our respective stalls. Even if I'm just trying to pee, I can't concentrate if someone's talking to me! tongue  

However, I CAN go much better if there's music playing...which is why I'm a huge fan of restaurants who pipe music into their bathrooms.  I've considered passing around a petition to the women in the office about putting a radio in our bathroom to drown out the "silence" of listening to someone else do their business (especially me!).  However, I can think of a few people who wouldn't sign it because they actually bring their cell phones into the bathroom with them and carry on conversations (PERSONAL conversations) while on the toliet!  It baffles me. wink

Hehe - we have "preference stalls" in our bathroom, too!  That's so funny.  4, 5, 6 & 9 are the preferences in mine.  I like the one that's next to the wall because a) IF someone is stupid enough to sit in the stall next to me when all the others are free at least I know no one else will be sitting on the OTHER side of me and b) if I'm really not feeling well, I'll lean my head against the wall.  Hehe - is that weird/gross?! skull

Thank you....I have been sitting here all day feeling sorry for myself in my current job.  The positive is....I get to work at home and I get my own bathroom!  Now I feel better about the day.

I have fainted in bathroom stalls before and I try to always use the one up against the wall now.

I'll tell you, there's nothing that irritates me more then when I'm in a public stall and they're all empty except the one I'm in and the next person that comes in takes one of the stalls right next to me...I absolutely HATE that! But from now on I don't care and I hope I get let out loud stinky farts just to teach them a lesson LOL!

Gee Kitikatt, were you a golfer, you could play all 9 holes each day. Next time someone takes the stall next door fan a little of the ambiance over to that side of the room. Foooooooooooore!!!!

The way to get your own personal private stall is to leave bits of paper on the seat.  No one will ever use it.  They will walk in, see the mess, and turn around and walk out.    devil    Do it first thing in the morning and it is yours all day.

Put bits of paper in the the stall next door too and they won't use that one either.  devil devil

Thanks for posting that, kittikatt! That has always bothered me but I thought maybe I was just being overly sensitive. My other pet peeve is when people will just stand outside of the stalls having a conversation while I'm hiding in my stall trying to contain myself. Can't you guys take that outside? Jeez!

ok you guys are going to laugh (and that's totally cool) but I've just developed the habit of holding my ears if someone comes in. LOL. If I can't hear them, they are not there. turn turn

I had a friend in high school that would always run the tap water so no one would hear her peeing...I thought it was the oddest thing, realizing now that she contributed to our issue of todays lower supply of drinking water.

LOL, this post is fun (and yet not really funny, you know what I mean).

My office has only a handful of women. So that I could be anonymous, I used to get on the elevator and go to the restroom on a different floor!

I sooooooooooo understand! I've had this happen quite often, very similar circumstances too. So utterly rude to do that! After this happened one day, I asked a teammate what she would do, go to the stall adjacent to the occupied or skip to another empty -- she said skip one of course. At least she understands.

The personal conversations are just annoying, especially when they are whispering and looking at other BR users like you are intruding.

Come on now -- one of us needs to write up the rules.

Rule 1. If a stall is occupied DO NOT go in the stall right next to it if others are available.

idea  FallColors, that's a great idea.  I've considered putting up an OUT OF ORDER sign on the door next to me...at least while I'm in there doing my thing. smilewinkgrin

xray, I thought I was being overly-sensitive, too, but I just KNEW there were others out there (particularly within my Crohnie world!) who would feel the same way I do about the "skip a stall" rule!

And OMG janice...I HOLD MY EARS TOO SO I CAN'T HEAR OTHERS! Ha! Sometimes, I'll rub my hair around my ears to make an even louder noise so I have something else to focus on.

ImIn...before being diagnosed with Crohn's, I was in a different building and it only had 3 stalls on our floor.  So when I knew I was going to have an "attack", I always went to the next floor to go to the bathroom in order to stay anonymous!

Gosh, we are all so much alike with this issue.  Are we all women who think this or do MEN also have this kind of "bathroom etiquette" rule???  Seems like they would, particularly with urinals. tongue

It should be a courtesy thing like when bowling, you don't bowl your ball down the lane the same time the person(s) next to you do...if there are plenty of empty stalls then take the one furthest from the one being used, that's what I do.

We have 3 stalls in my office. I usually go in the farthest one from the door. I HATE when someone takes the middle stall. I also cannot stand those women who think that in front of the bathroom sinks is the prime place to stand around gossiping for 30 minutes, or even worse, talking on the phone! We have people with bathroom phobias in the office though, so they have air freshening sprays, a radio, and put metal thinks over the gaps in the doors so we have quite a bit of privacy. I guess I'm pretty lucky!

I personally hate stalls the smell rises and goes under and over the door i try to get the last stall at the very end and pray to god no body is in there if so you know what i do i sing to draw attention to myself not to loud but it tends to get people to grab there  small kids and young teen age rs to leave so i can get out of that stall cause i will stay in there till everyone leaves and gas bars rest rooms i think i would sooner poop myself i am telling you i know were every bathroom is here straight through to the city the clean and dirty ones the dirty ones i had to go some times but i hover the seat which is hard when you got bad cramps to begin with but i manage,I'll tell you something funny once me and my husband were driving to the city i had cramps so bad i couldn't get out of the car of i ducked in the back of the truck in a sub way cup and did my business and had to use those dreaded hard tissue but there was no way i could have made it to the bathroom another 45 minute drive. I went to a medical supply Pharmacy and bought a sturdy, round, low sided bucket with a lid.  I line it with a plastic bag and keep a roll of TP in there.  Folded in the backseat is a bathtowel and a bottle of water. If I cannot make it to a bathroom, I pull over at a secluded place and hop in the backseat to use the bucket and clean up.  When I get home I tie and throw away the plastic bag, wash the underside of the lid and line my bucket with a fresh bag.

Bathrooms:  I cannot *STAND* for anyone to be able to hear me 'go'.  If I have to go in a 'busy' public restroom I take my time until I am reasonably sure most people in there with me have already left.  I think I recall reading somewhere that the first few stalls were the most popular.  Because of this, I try to go to the one furthest from the door.

You have so hit on my irritation as well. I work at a university and there is a small sitting area at the front of the restroom. Recently, some students have decided that this is a great place to hang out between classes and take naps, set up there computer or have coffee time in there. Then I have to walk past them when I am finished. Who would design a restroom with a sitting area in it with a coffee table and chairs!

Noulls, just to make them realize how silly they are, when I walk in I would say "hey ladies, just to warn you, I'm really not feeling well. You might want to leave for this one." I bet they would skadaddle.
