colonoscopy with my period?

Ok, so May 18 is the day.  I just realized that will be the first day of aunt flo!  I can't imagine anything more humiliating.

I guess I will see if it actually comes that day (i'm pretty regular) but I just can't imagine that I will prep, starve and have both an endoscopy and colonoscopy on the first day which is the crampiest and crabbiest day.

Am I just a big baby?

I've had colonoscopies done during my periods, I get put to sleep so it doesn't bother me and the GI is a doc so I think he's past being grossed out by a chicks period considering what he does in his line of work LOL. I never wore a tampon during my scopes either but as far as I've known it wasn't an issue for my GI that I had my periods during scopes, so don't worry about it.

I had my gall bladder removed recently.  I had to wait a MONTH before they could schedule me for surgery and the earliest they could get me in was the week my period was to start. shocked

I considered rescheduling the surgery because I couldn't stand the thought of having to deal with surgery AND my period...Ewww! Plus, I thought it'd be gross for the surgical team!!! skull   But the surgeon's NP told me it was no big deal...they dealt with that all the time and it wasn't a problem for THEM.  They use big table pads during all surgeries (colonoscopies, too) in case of any "leakage" of body fluids.  They're kind of like those pads used to house-train puppies! smilewinkgrin  

So since I also couldn't stand the thought of putting the surgery off any longer, I went with it.  My period started the night before surgery.  eyes

I was really excited when they told me I could keep my undies & pad on during the surgery since it wouldn't be in the way.  But while they were wheeling me to the OR I really had to pee and I told them that. So they decided to hook me up to a catheter.  So after they put me under they stripped off my undies and put in the catheter...after surgery my undies were in a "HAZZARDOUS MATERIALS" bag in my private room!  HA! tongue

I'm just thinking about the prep, the day before and how hard it is to begin with.  I will be a pmsing hungry maniac.  I have to wait until 3pm the next day too to have the test.

I'm just annoyed.

I had mine done during that time. They said it would be fine and it was so....not really much to worry about. You won't even care after they insert the IV.

I had both of my scopes done while I had my period.  Never an issue, I just wore a tampon both times.  I was a bit embarrassed, but no one else thought it was an issue...

I used an ob tampon without a string. That made it more comfortable to know know one would see the string hanging out. If I were you and couldn't use a tampon I would remove my pad at the very last minute. The actual procedure doesn't take long enough to bleed out. (hopefully) My GI says he deals with it all the time. good luck

Don't worry about it, I never wear tampons for colonoscopies and it's never been an issue.

I don't wear a tampon either. They took care of it somehow and it wasn't an issue :)

When I had my barium enema done, I had my period and I remember not being sure if it would be OK so I called to make sure. I had a tampon in though so it wasn't so bad, but I can just imagine if I couldn't wear tampons and I had to worry about bleeding everywhere between putting my undies back on. Ugh! That really sucks. I'm sure they've seen it happen hundreds of times, though.

Ive never used one but could you try a menstrual cup? It is not a tampon but a cup you put in there to collect fluid.

you know if I can get it moved to another date not too far off, I may just do that.  It's not worth the anxiety.

I was hoping to get all this done so I can continue on with IVF..I don't want to postpone but I can't even cycle again until July anyway at this rate.

Bring some wipes with you...I do that anyway...it feels gross, cause my body is usually spitting out stuff after the scope...gas, mucus, other fluids rolleyes...the prep and the scope get everything irritated so my gut continues to work even though there is nothing there. I've learned to take my wipes with me to clean up...

Nah, you're not being a big baby...I'm a bigger baby at having to drink that awful stuff...I try almost everything to get out of it...and even then I don't drink all of it (usually don't have to anyway, my D is useful for something at least)

Moving it would be fine if you are regular enough... I would hate for you to move it and then for you to have your period again. Do you mind if I ask why you can't wear tampons? I'm just curious cause I had never heard of that. Also, way back when, women wore pads w/o adhesive and they wore them w/ belts. Maybe you could wear a contraption like that or wear a thong? It would hold the pad up front and still allow the docs to get to your bum. Good luck!

I wouldn't worry about the bleeding part. I had a seton placed in January for my anal fistuala and wouldn't ya know it, I started the night before the surgery. Which of course meant I was on my "heavy flow day" the next morning. The nurse said, it's no big deal and let me keep my panties/pad on till it was time to wheel me off. And then when I woke up, I had these awesome (and totally useless) mesh panties on to hold the giant gauze pad up against my butt. I was so out of it from the meds that I just pulled my panties up over the mesh things, went home and crashed for the rest of the night. And dealt with it later when I woke up. Not a big thing.

I don't know if there is an anatomical reason for not being able to wear tampons but I've never had success.  I have worn them and they are never comfortable and don't fit right.  I know I'm doing it right but maybe it's my angle.

I feel crampy today and I'm thinking that it may come early.  That would be great.

I had both a surgery and a scope done while on my period. And I woke up both times missing my tampon! Haha! The last scope I had I just told them I was on my period, and they gave me this gigantic pad that was like 3 feet long and 2 feet wide. I felt like I had a diaper between my legs, and when I woke up from that the pad was gone! Those darn tricky doctors!

Seriously though, whats a little blood, when these doctors work with....well....crap all day!

I am so happy I found this thread I have a colonoscopy due on the 18th August and just checked if things go to plan I will be on my 2nd day of my period usually im bang on time im so not looking forward to drinking the prep and all the fluids you have to take with it I never drink that much fluid all day never mind in 2 hrs then another dose of prep and more fluid I dont know yet if it will be a morning or afternoon procedure they will let me know 3 days before hand but I was starting to stress out that I would be on my period I just want this over and done with as I have had unexplainable diarrhea for 3 months now I have unconfirmed IBS, tablet controlled diabetic and also family history of that word in the bowls so just a bit on the worried side :s
