stef, someone brought this up a few months ago, and i wrote this long winded description of all the gross things that happened to me, and what i thought the causes were......stresses and allergies, etc............
no one ever came back to that thread. i have no idea whether anybody read it or it helped the poster.
so, i'll cut out all the gross hacking up the offending food covered with snotty goo, and tell you of my quest. before i had a computer, i finally found another guy who it happened to, and then shortly after that, found that my uncle had the same problem (we connected on eating turkey). my uncle had just had his esophagus stretched. my GI said that he would scope me any time i felt froggy, and maybe stretch it out. i never felt comfortable with that whole program................there must be something wrong with me.........i'm ok with it where the sun don't shine, but,...........down my throat?............................
anyway, when i had to quit work, i lost my health insurance and had to rely on the VA as my healthcare. on one of my first few checkups, (my PA is really good about listening, and asking 'is there anything else that's troubling you?') i happened to remember to bring this up, since we were talking about gastro issues. he listened intently as i went through all my theories about stress and food allergy, and needing my esophagus stretched, etc, etc. as he was listening, he was writing on a rx pad, and shoved it at me, and said, "lets try this first." it was prilosec. i had always thought of it in the same way as pepcid, but it's not the same. i had lived most of my life, and my dad, his, on rolaids.
when i went back, i told him that if he was a chick, i'd kiss him.......her! he had changed something that had been a part of my life for probably at least the last 40 years. my wife loves it, too. now i can go out to dinner without gagging and running off to the head. i can, with impunity, eat all the trigger foods like beef, chicken, and fish.........and especially turkey. thanksgiving was always a wonderful meal that usually turned nightmare for me.
i would never have thought that this was a part of GERD (and i'm not saying that it is for you), but, i had tried explaining this to doctors for years, and they all missed it. it took a physicians assistant (who apparently had seen it before) to change my life.....literally!
now, if he can just come up with a miracle for ulcerative colitis.
