rectal stricture/dilation ?

Hi all:)

Been a while since i last posted so ignore my sig as im sure its completely different now;)

Wondering if any knows how long dilation of a rectal stricter lasts? During my colonoscopy today my Dr dilated a "tight stricture in rectum" ..I knew (amongst other things) I had something blocking me there..watery BM were even hard to pass some days. Ive now had a BM since he dialed me and WOW(!!) what a relief! I was unable to speak with my Dr directly and this was written as well as told to my friend so I didn't get to ask ?'s..but my friend did say i will probably have to have this done again..soooo just wondering how long the relief will last?..I'm sure it varies but can i at least expect a good while or will the tightness return like next week..lol tongue

I haven't had it done, but I've seen people here say they were good for a couple of years after dilation. That's great that it has provided you so much relief!

I haven't had it done either, but what I have read is that they usually last about 6 mos. So I think your safe for a bit. Good luck!

Alas, it totally depends on your stricture.  I also have an anal stricture which gets dilated every 6 months....it does very much help.

What my gastro does is to do it during my usual yearly colonscopy and then schedule a flex sigmoidoscopy (with sedation) 6 months later.

Things that help:

  • I found that certain foods cause more difficulty than others....the biggest culprit seems to be mushrooms? They don't seem to digest and I have an awfully hard time getting them to pass. 
  • Drinking lots of water 
  • I have a couple of Fleet's enemas on hand just in case I'm having a particularly difficult time passing stool.
  • Anal Pram.

My daughter just had a pyloric stricture dilation done and I was wondering the same thing today. I didn't have an opportunity to ask the GI doctor. It's good to see that you are getting relief.

I just had a dilation done in the OR last month and it didn't help much at all.  I'm scheduled to go back for another dilation next month.  I don't know if it will work and am very stressed out.  I really felt nauseous and worried when my surgeon told me, on my last visit, that the only sure way to help me is to remove my rectum and colon.  I have been a wreck since then.  I can't deal with the thought of an ileostomy and it terrifies me.  I'm wondering if I should try to find treatment elsewhere but don't know where to look.

This is an old thread of mine and I figured I bump it back up to see if anyone else is in the same boat. It's been a few years since I posted this and things have just gotten worse. Like the poster above me- I had a surgeon recommend removing my rectum. Of course, I'd like to avoid that if possible. I have VERY VERY tight stricures (2-3 of them) in the rectum and I need Miralax and my bm to be basically water in order to pass anything..is it possible to have these stretched for the rest of my life? Has anyone had a successful stricureplasty in this area? Anyone have any advice or any ideas.. I'm really overwhelmed... I'm hoping to get into a clinical trial here shortly for Prochymal (stem cell infusions) but of course, even with that.. The small chance I actually go into remission.. It won't fix the damage already done... cry

Hi, I have anal stenosis and was diagnosed based on my surgeon's examination and didn't have any colonoscopies for that. My last colonscopy was last july. I'm mentioning this as I'm not quite sure of my problem. I, too, can hardly pass stool and have to take glycerin suppositories. I asked my doc about dilation but he refused performing any procedures. His rationale is that if it's inflammation, and not scarring as the surgeon said, it will become worse. I already have proctitis but can't insert any medicinal enemas, so my doc suggested that I can use glycerin suppositories as many as I'd like, take Daflon 500 which increases blood flow to this area, apply creams in the rectum,have sitz baths, and take steroid suppositories to relieve any congestion. Then, I can take either pentasa enema or budesonide enema. My surgeon has also mentioned that removing my colon might be the solution but the GI refuses any talk about this issue. I'm just wondering that both Remicade and Humira are effective in treating intestinal strictures, can't they be used for the rectal one?

I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes as I read other people's experiences with rectal strictures. I felt like the only one dealing with this. Mine was so bad it resulted in a colostomy, but because Crohn's is such a *****, I have a fistula that goes from my small intestine to below where my stoma is so I am back to where I started. My doctor dilated me 9 months ago, but the past few weeks I've been experiencing those same feelings again.

I'm devastated. I feel like I cannot beat this disease...it's just not a fair fight. Outside of the stricture, I feel amazing. I'm on Remicade but at a low dosage because I developed 2 melanomas and my doctor thinks the Remicade could have been a factor. I just feel hopeless. I know if my doctor dilates again I'll probably feel good for a while, but the thought of having to get dilated on a regular basis is upsetting. Anyone else ready for a cure???

Hi,

I had a fissurectomy and anal dilation done in September 2011. I am just now started to have problems again, so I would guess a little more than 6 months.

I had a flex sigmoid done on Monday and my Gastro also dialated my rectal stricture. It had been about six months since my last dilation, which was with my colonoscopy back in November. The dilation has helped me loads!

Hi! I also have had many dilations done on my rectum...usually about every 6 months for the last 3 years. Works so far...This pocedure does not take long at all.  I even had it done while pregnant with no sedation....that was painful.

I am not quite sure how long the Specialiist can keep this going but it`s worth a shot!!
