NSAIDs...I know I shouldn't use them but....

Ok so for the past 3 weeks I have had a terrible time in the bathroom. I have been having on average 7 bms a day and tons of rectal pain, some bleeding and mucus. The rectal pain has been so bad the past few days that I have not been able to sleep let alone function well. I think I have a combo of hemmies and maybe some fissures. I reached my breaking point yesterday and took some vicodin which still did not relieve the pain. So I did exactly what I am NOT supposed to do and took some advil 400mg. Within a few hours I felt SO much better. Took some more last night and I slept through the night and woke up without the horrid pain in my rectum. My BMs even seem to be slowing down and were formed this morning along with less gas than I have been experiencing lately. If it wasn't for the fact that we are supposed to avoid NDSAIDs I would say this is the perfect fix for the issues I have been suffering with for the past few weeks. Anyone have similar experiences?

Yeah... Every now and again I reach for the Advil. I'm having some pain right now that is not helped at all by the vicodin (two of them!) so I took an advil. I do NOT do it often because I've hemorrhaged and the docs thought that the NSAIDS contributed to it. So, I am always super careful. I joke that I feel like a junkie when I reach for the Advil! ;-)

Oh I'd be very careful with that, especially since your already having some bleeding. I almost died from bleeding after taking nsaids for headaches I was having. Sound like it's time to call your doctor and see if he can help you to feel better. I stay away from NSAIDS now at all costs, that hosiptal stay was not worth it.

I only took one dose today so far...I see the doc on Wednesday and I have a whole laundry list of stuff for him! LOL. He is ok with my using celebrex from time to time for my arthritis so long as I take it with nexium. But I know that works slightly differently than advil. I was on a heavy dose of NSAIDs back in April when I had some surgery on my tooth and jaw and I seemed to have tolerated it just fine...but at the time I did not have any disease activity. I just want my bum to stop aching!! I am going on vacation the week after next so I really hope I can at least enjoy myself a bit. Sigh....

When I switched GI's I discussed NSAIDS with her because my previous dr had never told me anything about not taking them. My new dr, whom I love, said to avoid them if I can, but she said, being a woman, she wouldn't avoid them for cramps or headaches so she can't expect me to never take them either.

I rarely take Advil, but if I have a headache that tylenol doesn't touch, that's when I turn to it.

Granted I had been taking them for a few months pretty regularly for headaches when I had my sever bleed. I was at a crappy very stressful job, so it was a daily headache for me. I'm just scared of them now, but boy do I miss them. Tylenol doesn't do much, and now I saw on the news the other day that they want us to lower the dose we take of them? Gee they barely worked half the time as it was. Seems like we don't have any good answers for our pain.

I am like Bar, if the Tylenol is not taking the headache away, I will take Aleve or Advil. But its pretty rare when I do that, so I feel once in a blue moon is okay. JMHO

Advil (Ibuprofen) is the *ONLY* thing that will knock any of my headaches down. Tylenol, Aleve and all other non-ibu products *do not work* for me. I have to stay away from aspirin and acetemenaphin(Tylenol) because they will make me faint...I guess by dropping my blood pressure too quickly?
Anyhow, Advil is the only thing that works for me.
However...I find if I can take 1-2 ibu's (200-400mg) at the first *hint* of a headache, I can knock it down quickly. If it has progressed a little further than that, I can double that dose and knock the headache down. BUT...if I have progressed to headache *with* nausea...it is too late. It means I would have waited too long to eat and nothing will help me but to vomit and lay down. Also, I can never "sleep away" a headache. Every time I have tried, I always *always* wake up with an even worse headache. I have learned to knock them down at the first hint so they cannot progress.
I have also found, besides waiting too long to eat...keeping myself *hydrated* means I'll have less headaches.

I'm the same way Heidi, I have to knock it down at the first sign, or I'll be in trouble. Tylenol will actually help if I catch it REALLY early. A lot of the time it doesn't, and then it's laying down with an ice pack. I've had them to the point where nothing but a trip to the ER will do, when I just can't handle the pain. When I get a bad migraine they always last 3 days. Runs in the family for me.

I get daily headaches though (was worse when I was working), so I know I couldn't try and just take an NSAID here and there. Ice is my friend when Tylenol doesn't do the job though.
