When is it time to go to the ER???

I am on Humira, and have had diahrea for about 10 days now. Went to urgent care yesterday morning, and the dr gave some cipro and ordered stool test because it looked like a stomach bug. however I also was running a temp and have been no since Friday. I took my shot Fri morning. My temp is 100.2 and wont go down even with Tylenol. I dont feel like Im dying but I do feel pretty bad...should I wait for the antibiotics to take effect or because of all the possible side effects of Humira should I just head to the ER now????

I think that if your temp is that high, you need to go back down to the hospital.

We can't mess around when we're on medications like Humira. My instructions have always been to go to the hospital *immediately* if my temp gets anywhere near 38C. I've been hospitalised on the basis of a 37.8C temperature alone.

Have you called your GI afterhours number?

That temp is not high, though it's worrisome that it won't break. Before heading to the ER, I always call the GI first. It's a free call, and they can tell me what they think and maybe call ahead before you go up there. One time I called, the jerky GI on call said that it was up to me - I could wait or go. Helpful! So, I thought through what the ER would do for me. Sitting in the ER for 6 hours in a hard plastic chair just to have a doc tell me to continue on my antibiotics and call the GI in the morning is not worth my time or copay. If I feel dehydrated, to the point of not being able to make it until tomorrow, then it's worth going to ask for an IV of fluids. If I'm in pain my Vicodin cannot touch, it's worth going for something stronger. I will admit to being incredibly frugal, and still paying off hospital bills from 2.5 years ago, so I tend to try and make it until the GI office opens the next morning. ER visits are really pricey for me.

I just took shower and feel better, I am gonna call the after hours GI dr this evening. Thanks so much for your feedback.

Aimee, I agree with you about the ER. Most the times I have been I end up just waiting for 5 hours and then being told to speak to their GI attending the next morning. Waste of time to go unless you really have symptoms which can be fixed.

Doc, hope you feel better soon and your fever breaks. I would definitely go back to the hospital if it doesn't.

Fever rose to 102.6 I just took some more Tylenol...ok now I'm a wiwwle nervous... Lol

Hi Doc,

I am sorry you are feeling so badly.  I would definitely call your GI immediately.  Please keep us posted and I hope you are better real soon.

Thanks...I really am not in any pain at all, just feeling yucky from the Fever. You know hot then freezing cold, dizzyness etc...but

Well it finally broke! I did get a call back from the on call GI who was No HELP I almost laughed at him. He says "uuuuum I'm perplexed humira doesn't cause fever unless you have a infection." I wanted tobreach through the phone and choke him! But violence is never the answer lol. Gonna call my personal gi this am.

LOL Doc2007 I think violence in some cases is allowed, especially with dumb GI's. Let us know what YOUR doc says.

Been in contact with nurse and doctor today and he is not overly concerened right now. He actually said stop taking Tylenol and see how high my temp will go. 104 to 105 is alarming he said. My crohns is like whatever right now all I want to do is take a decent dump lol!

Never went to the ER...Still feel like crap but the feever has stoped spiking, still ran a low grade fever yesterday twice...99 and then 100

finished Cipro but still having complete waterey diahrea. and my gut is tender and Im stiff and it is sore when I walk for to long or sit up too long...Dr apt set for friday.

I have crohn's and usually only go to the ER when I get obstructions, however I've been having severe abdominal pain like my intestines are being cut from the inside out. Its horrible and this is now the 6th day and I had to take hyrocodine lastnight. I have no bleeding nor fevers, what's wrong this time??

Had Dr. appt this morning, battery of test, first round of test for Liver, Kidney, bladder problems all came back good no sign of anything, so Humira not causing any problems there.
So narrowing ti down to virus in my system, or bacteria, but first round of stools showed nothing except white blood cells which is a sing of inflamation.
have to do another round of stool cultres over the next three days

GO! PLEASE GO! i almost lost my life becuase the doctors kept chalking it up to mild crohns flare ups. I endined up in the hospital with my life on the line. PLEASE don't let what ever you have get worse. Especially when your on those risky meds. Its not worth risking your life. TRUST ME. I ended up going pale loosing my hair and everything and in the ER with excrusiating abdominal pain. i also was in the hospital for two weeks on high doses of prednesone and a feeding tube. PLEASE if your not feeling well go see a doctor and you could possibly insist on getting checked out for crohns or IBS or something like that.

just do what you feel is right.
