Clear Colonoscopy on Thursday, admitted on Saturday???

My wife had exploratory surgery in 1989 and was diagnosed with Crohn's, they ended up giving her a resection then. She had an up and down battle with Crohn's for years, then she finally had a 2nd resection done in 2006.

Since, she is getting colonoscopies yearly, just to make sure she is staying in remission. Thursday, she had a colonoscopy and it was the first time she ever heard that she was completely free of Crohn's. Everything looked 100% normal. Good news, right?

Come Saturday, only two days later, she doubled in pain. She knew something was wrong, so we went to the ER. She had a CT Scan and was told she had a partial blockage. Admitted!!!!

Her pain cleared by Sunday and she has been on a liquid diet. It sounds like they are sending her home today.

My question is this. Could she be symptom free and if she ate one thing that she shouldn't have, could it flare everything so quickly? She cheated Friday after her colonoscopy. She ate an entire McDonald's cheeseburger, something she never did before.

Well I am considered in remission myself right now. Have been doing really well, but I can tell you if I ate McDonalds I would probably wind up in the ER too. For some reason McDonalds kills me everytime. I never eat there any more. Also, since my resections I cannot eat red meat anymore either. If I do I wind up with obstructions. It hard for even the normal digestive system to break down, even harder for us Crohnie's. Hope she is feeling better soon.

Can the colon (and everything reachable with a colonoscope) be clear but the small bowel still have symptoms of a Crohn's flare?

A colonoscopy can only see the colon. CD can affect the entire GI tract. Where did the CT show the trouble? This is the problem with relying on only one test to make sure that every thing is A OK. Symptoms can be present in other parts of the body, and with CD those other parts of the body can also be joints, eyes..... But as far as a blockage, if your wife had problems in her small bowel, it would not have been seen in a colonoscopy. But it could also have been caused by adhesion wrapping around the intestines and have nothing to do with what she ate. Since she has had multiple surgeries she most likely has abdominal adhesion, so this is another possibility.

I second what the others have said about the small bowel. I hate how these tests can give you a false sense of security. I recently had the best scope results ever too. No signs of disease and my stricture didn't look quite so narrow. I've been cheating a bit too. Ended up with bloating, pain and other not nice symptoms a couple evenings. As much as we like to celebrate good results, when we are in remission we still have this DD. Hope your wife continues to improve.

It amazed me how Humira completely cleared her most troubled areas (it looks 100% healthy now), but it didn't help another area.

They are going to release her today. She has no pain, bowel movements, she can eat again. She does have narrowing, so maybe MkeeD got stuck in her gut?

She seems to be feeling better now, so that's good. I'm just concerned that Humira isn't working as well as we thought. Is it possible that sandwich just flared her up a little bit, but the Humira is still working?

It is possible that it could have been the MkeeD's that did it. Like I said before red meat is very hard for even a normal digestive tract to digest, plus something about the oil they use or something in their products just do a number on my gut. I think the Humira is still working. It could also have just been a twisted bowel that caused the obstruction.

Billy do you know where exactly in the intestine her blockage was? My GI tells me I have "blisters" that form and they cause blockages, but usually they bust pretty quickly.

They believe it was in the small bowel area. It was on her upper left quadrant of the gut.

I believe the colonoscopy itself, particularly the prep, might have irritated the gut.
