Anyone else have an Esophageal Stricture? Is that a normal Crohnie condition?

Had my scopes today - in addition to the issues found in the colonoscopy, the endoscopy found an esophageal stricture. They stretched it while I was under.

We didn't talk long about it, it seemed secondary to the Crohns issues found, but I know nothing about it so I'm anxious for more info. He thinks it's likely caused by years of acid reflux and GERD (which is why he did the scope initially).

Will the stretching last awhile?

My throat hurts a LOT - how long does it hurt after this procedure?

Is it linked to Crohns somehow or just part of the GI issue family?

What have you done to treat it?

Crohn's can manifest anywhere from the anus to the lips... so yeah its probably linked. I dont know anyone who's had it any higher than the stomach, though.

Grukar is correct, you can have Crohns anywhere from mouth to anus. There are so many different manifestations of this disease. It can affect your eyes, your mouth, your skin etc.

I hope you get feeling better soon. That didn't sound like a fun procedure. Hoping the stretching does the job.

My mother has crohns and also had to have surgery to have hers stretched. I have Celiac and before the GF diet was also having heartburn and gerd issues but none since going GF. My moms surgery was quite awhile ago (about 10 years) and she is just now starting to have issues again. She refuses to be tested for Celiac disease and is terrible about following her Chrons regiment.

It's not necessarily common for it to be in the esophagus but being crohn's it definitely does happen. I've heard that prednisone is typically used to treat the less common areas that get affected with CD, I hope you find relief soon, I cannot imagine how awful this must be for you.

I don't know why, but my doctor and I suppose many other GI's seem to think that Crohn's does not commonly affect the stomach. There are some cases of lesions due to Crohn's, but they are fairly rare. What they don't seem to realize is that it is very common for Crohn's patients to have gastritis. I can think of a few ways that this could be connected to Crohn's, but my doctor seemed to think it was unlikely. I have found an article that showed 32% of Crohn's patients had gastritis unconnected to H pylori (see: BMJ.com. There is no direct causal link made, but it seems to me that that is a fairly good indication of a connection. This is a long way of saying that, yes, there is a link between Crohn's and your esophagus problem. The gastritis and reflux cause scarring and that results in narrowing of the esophagus.
