Doctors in York, PA?

Hi again!  I'm still trying to get back to being an active member here; the older I get, it seems, the fewer minutes there are in each hour, fewer hours in each day, fewer days in each week, etc., etc., etc.  Anyway, I am contemplating a move to York, Pennsylvania, to be closer to my daughter and grandchildren, but also to be able to afford my own apartment without being on a waiting list for senior housing.  I want my own bathroom, my own kitchen, and I want to clean up my own messes and no one else's.  Is that horribly selfish? 

I am contributing to my brother and his family here, and I know I can stay as long as I like, but I am too dependent on them.  I don't drive any more; I have kept my old doctors, but they are quite a distance away and when I visit them I have to go with my Sister in Law to her shop and spend the whole day out.  Getting up that early is hard on me, and I really do want to be independent again.  Yet everytime I say something about moving, she says,  "But what about your doctors."

I am willing to start over with new ones, but I just thought I'd ask if anyone lives in that area and can make recommendations, or knows how best to find the specialists and family doctors that are right for me.  Any ideas?  Thanks, loads.

Oh, by the way, I'll remove my geocities link next time. Yahoo is shutting it down but I have until November, and if I decide to transfer it somewhere else I'll let you know.  Thanks again for your help and support for many years now.

I live in Pittsburgh PA, and Im guessing that York is 4-5 hours away by looking at a map I found on google.  Depending on how bad your Crohns is I would recomend seeing my GI.  Dr. David Binion, hes internationally known and speaks at MANY conferences (he also has Crohns himself)  best GI I have ever met.  He has 4 partners and is located at UMPC Presby in downtown Pittsburgh.  He also has a team of GI surgeons, one of which is a professor of surgery and is also my surgeon Dr. Andrew Watson.  I see you said you want a Dr that is closer to you, but like I said depending on how bad your Crohns is, or how mild, Id really recomend them....especially if your in remission and only need to see them once every 6 months to a year.

Thanks so much, MAG. I used to live in Johnstown, which is much closer to Pittsburgh than York is, and for several years I lived in Baden, PA. If I ever have to go to a nursing home, I would want to go to the one in Baden, and if that happens, I'll certainly consider your recommendations.

Meanwhile, York is closer to Baltimore than Pittsburgh, and there is an eminent gastroenterologist at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Ted Bayless, if I am not mistaken.

My concern, however is this: When I had to call 911, the ambulance would take me to only one hospital, where they had none of my records and knew none of my doctors. If, living alone, this should happen again, I would want more choices. I understand that there are two hospitals in York and the EMT's ask you which you prefer. I will keep researching. Thank you so much.

I don't know about doctors in York. Hopkins is a solid hour plus from York down I-83. Harrisburg is closer -- about 30 minutes. Hershey Med Center, which is a Penn State teaching hospital, is also about 30 plus minutes. I used Hershey when I was very ill and had a very positive experience.

I would get a doctor who has hospital priviliges. York does have hospitals, but they are smaller than Harrisburg and Hershey. I suggest you check out the websites of the York hospitals and use the "Find a Physician" tools. If they don't have GI doctors or colo-rectal surgeons, I would look elsewhere.

Thank you, FallColors! Do you live in York or nearby? I'll bet it won't be too long before the fall colors show themselves there. You gave me some great advice and I will check it out.

Lynn, it's so nice to see you here again. I have really missed this site, but my brother has a big, interactive family and there aren't so many chances to be at my computer. My regular time used to be around ten, PM, but four nights a week I help watch my grandniece while her mom works nights. Her dad works long daytime hours and sometimes doesn't get home till midnight. By then, I am too tired to do anything but work crosswords or read. Children are my biggest joy, though; so I really appreciate the time I get to spend with her, and sometimes my three year old granddaughter. My grandniece will be three in December and some of her cousins are between one and three, my favorite age group. So I have no regrets about the time I spend with any or all of them; I'm just sorry there isn't enough left for chatting. Well, at least there's never a dull moment. Thanks for the greeting; I think you might have changed your screen name since I met you. I remember you as Lynn, though.
