Hello!

I was wondering how many of the ladies out there are on birth control? Have you noticed any problems with your CD?

I have been thinking about getting on the NuvaRing but am completely hesitant because I don't want it to aggravate my Crohn's!

A few years back I was on Ortho-TriCyclen low, and it didn't really agree with me so well. I was told that NuvaRing worked differently, but just wanted to figure out what worked for everyone else! The docs really have been no help on this issue!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thanx guys! =-)

Hi Emma,
Long time no see, hope you have been doing well! I personally use depo, but I have problem with blood loss (and I puke too often to take an oral med) and this stops the loss from periods most of the time.

I've been on Yaz for quite a while, and I don't think it effects my CD. I found that my hormones were all over the place, and taking birth control leveled me out.

I am on Cerazette so I dont get my monthly period.
I cant feel the difference though if I think about it my CD/UC started when I went on the pill :S

Dont know if it is related :P

I was on the pill before I got diagnosed, but my GI suggested that I stop taking it when I got diagnosed, she said that the pill can make it harder to treat CD for some people.

I've been on some form of BC since I was 16 (started then due to amenorrhea) including OrthoTricyclenLo, Microgestin, NuvaRing, LoEstrin, and Yaz.

I was on NuvaRing for a short time with Crohn's, but it gave me yeast infections--I have friends who are on the ring and haven't had any problems, so I attributed this higher incidence to the Crohn's. Currently, I'm on Yaz and I notice more problems (just some extra indigestion, bloating, softer stools) the week before my period, when I'm taking the placebo pills. These aren't big enough issues to make me switch though. I LOVE Yaz--I had terrible PMDD on Microgestin so Yaz as been a godsend.

I am just starting my 2nd implanon implant, had the last one the full 3 years and loved it so got a new one as soon as it ran out! For me its been a great option as

-I don't get periods except maybe 2/3 days light bleeding a year and with Crohn's periods always meant horrific cramps and diarrhoea too

-it delivers hormone consistently so it doesn't fluctuate hormone much so less mood swings/stress - always a good thing lol!

-avoids the whole issue of malabsorption which is something that worried me a lot with the pill, and also its just there so there risk of forgetting to take a pill - you'd think with Crohn's I'd be good at remembering to take pills by now! 

also as I am on methotrexate I wanted a very reliable option as I absolutely cannot risk accidently getting pregnant on that drug.

I took BC pills for over 10 years and had no problems with my Crohns. I think life would have been even worse if I had not taken them. After I had my tubes tied, I thought great no more BC pills, but I was then miserable 3 weeks out of the month. Briefly went back on BC to help some, but ended up having a complete hysterectomy. I think BC pills really help with the PMS symptoms. Good luck!

I am on Loestrin 1.5/30 and I've had no problems with it regarding my CD. In fact, being on it has probably benefited it because the heavier my period, the more symptoms it will cause; being on the pill makes it a lot lighter. I tried the NuvaRing last year because we were unsure if I was able to absorb my pill entirely (because of the CD)... I tried it for 2 months but it actually made my periods ridiculously heavy and irregular and aggravated my symptoms as well. I'm presently back on the pill.
