Hi all,

My name is Maggie and I was curious about something. I'm going to try and get pregnant in the next few years. I was wondering if anyone had gotten sucessfully pregnant while on meds, or if I should talk to my doc about stopping them all together. I'm VERY luck because I haven't had a flare in over two years. So I was just wondering if anyone had gone through this, or if it's EVER been documented for one of us to get off meds and be flare free...?

Welcome to Healingwell!! My names Chris, how did you find or hear about Healing Well if you don't mind me asking?
I think you'll find that you'll really like it here, and grow to even care about others here and their situation. Its really supportive and thats why people keep coming back.

Read the post called 'long-term entecort' I believe. I believe it was Nanners that said something about multiple people here have been on steriods, and biologics like remicade, humira, imuran, things like that, because many doctors believe its best for the women to be healthy better for the baby that is.

You should really read that, and the other advice on the entecort.

I see both my Gyno and my Gastro in the next week. I'm just worried that the Gastro will say stay on the meds, and the Gyno will say get off...

I found this through a google search for Imuran Taper. Great site so far!

Hi MagsGuts,

And welcome to Healingwell. As I stated on another post, we have many new moms who have had successful pregnancies while on meds like Imuran/6mp, Remicade and even Humira. The thought is that a healthy mom produces a healthy baby. If you go off your meds, you are more than likely to get sick and that could cause serious complications in your pregnancy.

I hope one of these newer moms will be along soon. One has a link from a well respected doctor that says Imuran is safe during pregnancy.

We usually do have to have high risk ob's, so maybe try looking for one that deals with pregnancy and Crohns might be a good idea. Good luck!

Although you may not have had a flare in a while, you don't know if you would have if you had not been on medication. One important thing to keep in mind is that if you go off your meds and have a flare and get pregnant, you'll likely stay sick throughout the whole pregnancy, while if you're not flaring when you get pregnant, generally you won't have a flare during your pregnancy. I would definitely discuss it with your doctor, but I do believe that you should at least be on something while you're pregnant - if you are really uncomfortable with staying on Imuran, I would suggest that at the very minimum, you continue taking Asacol throughout the pregnancy.

Thanks again. I'm not going to try to get pregnant until I troubleshoot with my Crohn's meds to see what my bod can deal with.

You guys are great! I wish I'd have found this website a long time ago!!
