Hi everyone,

Did anyone have trouble getting a Crohn's diagnosis? is colonoscopy the only way?

I saw my dr and a blood test called ASCA came back pos. for Chrons'. we were thinking it's likely I may have it as the fact that some family members have it and ALL my symptoms match!

However, the colonoscopy did NOT SHOW IT.

My cousin's diagnosis came from the Barium test, not the colonoscopy.  Now my GI wants me to do a Small Bowel Follow Thru test.

How were some of you diagnosed with Chrons'?????

It was a tedious process. They could not even make a definitive dx, even after an exploratory laparotomy and biopsy. They said it looked like TB of the colon, they weren't sure. Then went to another doctor who said I definitely have Crohn's, before he did any real tests, I guess there is not one real test for Crohn's, and the colonoscopy can't go everywhere.

I have had two major surgeries since my dx in 97, but now I am doing good and healing well with no fistulas.

I too took alot of tests before being diagnosed. I do believe that it was the colonoscopy that finally helped me get a diagnosis.

I was a bit opposite of you, my scopes looked like crohns but my bloodwork didn't match. I was diagnosed IBS, then milk allergy(which I have), then UC, then Crohns.  Took 3 GIs before I got two diagnosis of crohns.

I had lots of blood tests and stool sample tests, but those were mainly to rule out parasites, etc. I had a scope and they saw all the ulcerations (I still have the pictures) and the biopsy came back positive for CD.

I did call the dr's office and the nurse said the biopsy results are not back yet. so more waiting.......

I had a barium enema first, the radiologist was able to tell from that that it was most likely Crohn's, then I went for a scope to confirm, and I was diagnosed then. All of my bloodwork has matched as well. I was very fortunate to have a textbook case, however it took a year for anyone to suggest Crohn's. I finally brought up the possibility to my doctor, because they were starting to give up on finding a diagnosis for me before that (without even checking my intestines, they were sure it was my stomach...) Go figure!

I did a lot of test also, did not have health insurance so we were trying to dx me cheaply! Didn't work, I finally had biopsy of lympth nodes which showed possible crohns, then we did a camera endoscopy which showed the crohns well. I think that may be the most difinative test because it shows everything. My crohns is in the middle of the sm. bowell, colonoscopy can't get that far.
