Maybe I don't watch the local TV stations enough, and others have seen this, but for me it was a first. I was watching the local evening news and saw a commercial for a major medical center in Boston advertising treatment for Crohn's and Colitis. Not a specific medicine or doctor, just to come to their hospital and use their facility. I'm just happy that Crohn's is going mainstream like other diseases. No stigma attached! Then again, unfortunately, it means that more people are being diagnosed with it and they think they can make money. That part make me sad.

I saw a crohn's commercial for the first time last night too! I don't know if it was the same one though. It was something about a website like livingwithcrohns.com.

I saw a UC or Crohn's commercial with an NHL player on it last week.

I love House too! I'll be glad when baseball is over. I only watch 2 shows (the other being Bones), and it seems like they've been preempted forever.

Zanne- I saw it too! I hadn't heard much about BMC for Crohn's and Colitis care in the past, but I might check it out as I live in Boston and have bounced between a couple hospitals in the Boston area.

I go in to Beth Israel once a year for a consult. But its just really nice that there is some recognition of CD. Not as a commercial for a drug company or for a website, which is usually a front for a drug company. Just a hospital putting Crohn's out there, like they would for heart disease or diabetes or any other condition. Actually as I am typing this Boston Medical Center just put a commercial on to come to their hospital for treatment for arthritis of the spine. They must have hired some new advertising company.

Whatever works to get Crohn's disease out in front of the main stream world.

I saw the livingwithcrohns.com commercial too, but it's a drug company supported site. My only thought with that commercial was -- what if instead of "you have to plan everything when goin out" they said " YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHERE EVERY BATHROOM IS"? I haven't seen David Garrard's comm. for awhile, but I like it too.

The Livingwithcrohns.com is a website for either Humira or Remicade, I can't remember which.  I was also going to mention CD mentioned in ER.  I don't remember it being negative..it was more like an afterthought.  There is also the commercial with the hockey player...or is that for UC.  Either way IBD is hitting mainstream.

the ER episode was a bad referance to a CD patient that was acuused of just looking for drugs kinda thing.. like as in... "shes just looking for pain meds, all she has is crohns" type deal. i dont recall the exact words but that was the jist of it. about 5 seconds.

There must have been 2 ER mentions because the one I remember, they were going to do surgery on him because of the CD.

What I meant by it being a first for me was that it treated Crohn's just like any other disease. NO negative connotation. Just, if you have this condition, please consider coming to our hospital to see our doctors. Just like their adds for Heart Disease, Arthritis, and Diabetes. No mention of what the disease is, because they assume that the condition is already main stream and people know what Crohn's is.

In this instance, unlike House and ER, Crohn's wasn't the punch line. And unlike the Remicade and David Garrard commercials, they were not trying to sell one particular treatment. They just treated Crohn's like it was any other disease, and I have never seen that before.

A patient on Scrubs had UC and they were debating whether he should have surgery. He was portrayed as kind of geeky and said he was looking forward to surgery b/c he hadn't dated in awhile since his disease made him gassy.

I recently started watching House and it's in season 1 episode 5 (darned if You Do) where IBD is mentioned (not CD or UC specifically). House goes over the older guy's meds: sulfasalazine, steroids, 5-ASAs, 6MP. He then prescribes him cigarettes and leaves! I actually did recently read something that said that smoking increases the odds of getting IBD, but actually helps alleviate the symptoms somewhat once you do have IBD.

I don't remember what episode of House, but crohn's was definitely mentioned by name in one.

Smoking is supposed to be awful for crohn's, but helpful for UC. Smokers who have UC have a horrible time with flares when they try to quit.

i think the living with crohn's website is for remicade. i visited the site and then i got remicade info in the mail, which was ironic cuz i wanted to change from my humira and this was the dr's other option. since being on the humira my hair is falling out and nothing positive has come from it.
