what are your Safe foods?

When I'm at the severist point of a flare there is no such thing as a safe food - even water causes an issue! But when its not too bad my safe foods are Complan shakes, cereal (with heated milk - it makes it much soggier and easier to digest) and bread minus the crusts with spread on it.

I'm amazed you all tolerate the carbs!  My safe food is always the chicken soup from the SCD diet.  I love it and it loves me!  All those bland carbs give me gas and pain.  I tolerate eggs and bananas well too.  As well as fish.

baby rice cereal with soy milk...even if you're on high prednisone, the soy helps out the carbs, and it is soooooo easy on the stomach. Weird is that I even like the taste...especially when I'm feeling crummy...Let's see...there's jello, I can even do pudding if it is smooth...still all better than ensure...have nightmares about the taste of that stuff...blech!

Fruit (really like mixed berries)

Keifer milk

Chicken

Lean Beef (not too often)

Fish

Almonds

Various veggies

That's about all I've tried so far!

I do all the White foods listed, plus I don't think I saw tapioca. I do make all my own puddings, custards and tapiocas with lactaid milk so that I don't have any issues with that. And I will give my favorite book one more plug. Cooking Well for the Unwell, by Eileen Behan. Lots of low residue recipes as well as every other dietary restriction you can think of. It is well worth the $4 for a used copy at Amazon.

• Plain hard-boiled lollies are brilliant (particularly when going for a colonoscopy). There is a certain kind I have, but I can't remember the name of them. Lets just say, they are awesome!

I tend to go through stages in regards to other foods. Milk for example can cause me to really badly flare, but after a break of a day or so, I can go back to having it. Seeds/grains are a definite no-no, at least regularly (once in a blue moon at someone else's place I might have a slice of seed/grain bread).

No matter what I eat, I still have D, but these seem to make me feel better nonetheless:

scrambled eggs, turkey bacon, Grilled Fish (usually tilapia, not salmon, too oily), grilled boneless/skinless chicken breast, chicken noodle soup, boiled shrimp, turkey burgers on a white bread english muffin, ginger snap cookies (helps with nausea!), saltines, pretzels, lots of water or occasionally I'll drink Sprite, we eat a lot of recipes with ground turkey, chicken and seafood in my house, I also like a lot of desserts - so I indulge in smaller bites of things like key lime pie, dark chocolate bites, and flavored sorbet or italian ice.


the unsafest foods for me: salad, popcorn, nuts, corn, pizza (I sometimes slip and get a frozen, thin crust cheese pizza and this does ok), red meat, pepsi/coke, alcohol, orange juice - the list goes on. The only thing thats horrible that I still eat is coffee. I can't live without it.

Keeping a food diary of everything you eat helps the most b/c everyone is different.

WendyG: some people can tolerate sodas, some can't. The main concern there is the bubbles can give you a lot of gas. As far as caffeine goes, it gives alot of people trouble (even some normal people get D from it!). I personally can tolerate diet caffeine-free sodas (I drink alot of diet gingerale when I'm feeling sick) but if I just had a regular coke it would probably give me some problems. If I drank a coffee I would be running for the toilet and feeling ill pretty quickly!

soda pop probably isn't the best idea, but you'll have to try it and see how he tolerates it. I don't drink it at all--it has no nutritional value, has a lot of sugar (which is generally hard to digest), and the carbonation and caffeine can be really hard on the digestive tract. But again, everyone is different and if he tolerates it, let him enjoy :)

When i have a flare up i do not really have a "safe food" everything makes me ill, i stick to water or flat gingerale (diabetic so have to watch sugars going too low when really ill) I drink lactaid milk all the time cause although i can tolerate a glass of milk at times i never know when so its "safe" so i just drink lactaid all the time. I can tolerate small amounts of cheese but if my stomache isn't doing well that day i avoid it and stay away, same with caffeine although and indulge and have a tea at times (sometimes i pay for it lol). Pop upsets my stomache, i think it is more the carbonation but the ache and pain is not worth the pop and really its empty calories so even with my kids its a treat that is not bought often in my home. greasy or fried food or spicy food and i am guaranteed to be sick. My joke is if your ever constipated just get a Big Mac works every time lol.

I have crohn's mainly in my small bowel ( TI disease) so i malabsorb alot of my food. Gross but alot of things come out the same way they went in. Salad (lettuce, spinach, corn, mushrooms etc) i love veggies raw but i am sick within the hour of eating them. My mom doesn't understand she thinks im sick because i don't eat enough veggies lol. I have never done a food diary but i am considering trying it to see if i can narrow it down further i've been off work for a little over 2 years and not getting any better this time around.

Sodapop is very individual. I cannot do diet drinks because artifical sweetners give me d. But I can do regular sodapop.
