Had my gastroscopy today... confused about results?

Hey guys, I had my gastroscopy done today. I hadn't had one done in over a year so my doctor wanted to see what was going on because he suspected that I may have Crohn's higher up in my small intestines. I'm probably having a pill cam done next. I'm a bit confused about my results, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what they mean. I'll type out from the report. My stomach and esophagus were both normal.

Duodenum: There was evidence of duodenitis in the 2nd portion of the duodenum. The mucosa appeared atrohpic.

What is atrophic duodenitis?! Does that mean that I have Crohn's in my duodenum? I really hope this doesn't mean I have Celiac disease too or something, it was the first thing that popped into my head. I did the blood tests for it like 2 years ago and they were negative though.

In the picture, one side of the duodenum is ridged and normal, but the other side looks really weird and a lot flatter.

Call your doctor for an appointment to see exactly what that means. It probably means you have some scarring/scar tissue or something due to Crohn's.

I've got an appointment in 3 weeks, but it's going to drive me crazy until then. Duodenitis is inflammation that can be associated with Crohn's, but when I tried looking up atrophic duodenitis, the only thing I seem to come up with is Celiac, which to me, is the worst thing I could possibly have, it would seriously be the end of the world to me. I'm kind of hoping someone else has heard this pop up on their scope results before, because I'm not coming up with much when I try googling, which is a bit unsettling haha.

I know what you mean. It is hard to wait those 3 weeks. It seems like an eternity. I would be devastated if I had Celiac's Disease. With Crohn's pretty much all I can eat are grain based foods. Good luck. Hopefully someone will post a reply with more info.

For right now it only probably means that you digestive system is not functioning properly (like when I had leg surgery my muscles atrophied, because I was not using them) it is something you already knew. No one really knows what is causing it until you get the pathogy reports back.

...Celiac is the first thing I thought of too cuz that definitely causes atrophy. BUT I've been off of gluten for a year and a half, and honestly, it's really not that bad. As long as you have a whole foods near by, it's pretty easy.. AND... also, those blood tests (for Celiacs) can give false negatives in that, the specific antibody (IgA) they test for in ppl can not show up simply because that person has a deficiency. ON the test they should have also tested for IgG antibody, and from ALL of my research, it seems that the reason they test the IgG is because it would show if there was a deficiency--meaning, both IgA and IgG should be around the same levels--correlate. I Could be wrong. Anyway, looking up symptoms/way of life/chances of improvement in health.. to Celiac and Crohn's--seriously, Crohns IS way worse! You can HEAL symptoms/damage from gluten(celiac), but Crohns..it seems like anything and everything sets it off. I know ppl who have fully recovered their health once they finally knew that gluten was the culprit. But Definitely ask your doctor what the results actually "mean". Good luck to you! Oh.. and just because you don't have "Celiac"--which means they would see atrophy(gold standard for diagnosis) doesn't mean you can't have a sensitivity to it. It can cause all the same aches and pains as if you had "celiac". I have NONstop migraines for 16day On..and about 12hours off.. and then the same 16day pattern.. and that dropped after being off gluten for a few months. CRAZY! I also know what I can eat at restaurants and now not get sick immediately after dinner, ruining all hopes of catching a movie after dinner.

Hi you can call his office and talk to his nurse and ask the nurse. they should be able to tell you.
