Common Sense for a GI to inform you of simple things?

So i was slightly ticked off last week, finally changed GI's because my old GI was a little too full of himself and was very old fashioned and unwilling to try anything "new" to the CD world. So i go to my new GI, who is 30, so only 5 years older than me, which oddly enough actually made me more comfortable in a talking sense, and as some of his preliminary questions he asks me if i have been taking Advil or any Ibuprofen. My reply "Well not all the time, but when i work to hard at the gym i take it for muscle pain or pulls", his reply, dont take that anymore, anti-inflammatories are horrible for CD, stick to just Tylenol. Then i thought back to a couple days before i exited a 2 1/2 year remission, i had been installing a new toilet at my grandparents and twisted the wrong way when putting the bowl down and ended up pulling something in my back. So i went to the drug store, because it was pretty painful and took a look in the area with all the back meds. I had heard so many stories about aleve (sp ?) and how it pretty much made back pain disappear instantly, so i pick some up and take it for the next two days......and of course what is aleve, a very strong anti-inflammatory.....been with my old GI for 3 years, not once did he ever inform me not to take anti-inflammatories, now my new flare might have been a direct result of taking the back meds, which really pisses me off.

Shouldnt simple things like this be mentioned upon diagnosis if they are that common sense to doctors? Like i can understand him not mentioning "Dont do heroin on sunny days in the winter" because thats something i probably wont be doing anytime in my life, BUT taking an advil, only like 95% of the human population has taken advil once in their life, but no point in mentioning that tid bit.

You would think that doctors should be knowledgeable about those sorts of things and bring them up . . . but I'm honestly not surprised that you found one that doesn't. It seems there are a lot of rotten GIs out there.

I had an ER doctor give me Toradol once, and I asked several times if it was an NSAID or if it's all right to use with Crohn's disease, and he swore up and down that it was perfectly fine. Got home, read up on it, and in big, bold letters, there was something to the effect of DO NOT USE IF YOU HAVE ULCERS OR INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE. MAY CAUSE BLEEDING. Doh.

But it sounds like your new GI knows what he's doing, so good for you for getting a new doctor!

I am with you on the toradol. The only time I have been pain free since before my DX. But it does make me bleed more.

In a perfect world they would tell us. Get this, when I was being released from the hospital for my resection in Jan. the resident doing my discharge told me if the Vicodin didn't completely work --- I should take Advil. I quickly informed this moron that I have Crohn's (read the chart) and couldn't take NSAIDs. At which he back pedaled and told me to call my doctor if I need something stronger.

Unfortunately, we are on our own for alot of the information we need --- that's why places like this are a God send.

I've had two deaths in my family due to perforated ulcers from long-term NSAID use according to post-mortems. Not something to mess around with! I'll admit I occasionally take the odd dose of ibuprofen if my arthritis is really giving me hell but will take as a last resort on a full stomach and a prayer, but in that situation its because I'm in so much pain the risk seems worth it. But even 'normal' people should took care with it, not just us with already diagnosed ulcerative conditions.

My GI Dr gives me Toradol for pain????? Should I not take it???

Sounds like you have one of those GIs that you would be better off without. I can't believe he is prescribing an NSAID to you.

It was my FAMILY DOCTOR who nearly flipped out when I said I was taking aspirin!!! She said with Crohn's disease you do NOT take anything but Tylenol or call me if you need something stronger.

I had an ER doctor give me Toradol into an IV w/o telling me what he was giving me - and he was aware I had Crohn's. When I was later told it was an NSAID "I" nearly flipped out and questioned him WHY he would order Toradol when he KNEW I had Crohn's. He said they've found it to be more effective than morphine w/o morphine's undesirable side effects and that given by injection it shouldn't cause a problem. "Shouldn't"?? says I, "shouldn't"??? If YOU had Crohn's maybe you'd be considerably more cautious.

To add insult to injury the Toradol did work wonders for the pain - but the idiot nurse gave it in an IV set in the dummy vein in the hand and injected it at the first "port" just above the set in the hand INSTEAD of up near the IV fluid bag where it would have been sufficiently diluted. I ended up w/ thrombophlebitis in 4 areas of my arm AND a blood clot in the axilllary vein and ended up on 6 months of coumadin. To say nothing of the fact that Toradol STINGS when administered if not sufficiently diluted.

So Darvocet is relatively safe for crohnies to take?

I recently had a doctor filling in for my doctor script Zipsor for me. Check THAT one out!

I have to admit I know the risks of toridol, but man it works on the structural (bone) pain.

I would say this though sometimes people are slow on the uptake. Like drinking on MTX, just do not do it. MTX itself causes liver problems, do you really want to risk it?
