When people with crohn's get mouth ulcers are they just regular mouth ulcers/cancer sores like other people get or do they look different? How can you tell if the ulcer is from crohn's? Do they ever biopsy these ulcers to see what they are?

My dentist photographs mine so he can see how they are progessing. My usually start out looking like a chemical burn and then progess to blistering stage.

So, can a dentist tell the difference between a cancer sore and an ulcer from crohn's then? Do the crohn's ulcers usually last longer?

If it looks nasty enought he has biosy it, but generally they look like burns.
They can look like canker sores, but generally they do take longer to heal, and do not have a center pus core.

HUM....... kind of sounds like what I have. It's been in there for weeks now...... I go to the dentist next week, I'll ask her and see what she says. Thanks MMMNavy!!

they look like canker sores but mine tend to totally take over my mouth and throat so there is no question its crohn's related. Gross.
And they take forever to go away, I get them when I am starting a flare. I had them very bad a few months ago and the magic mouthwash helped to numb them taking it prior to eating.

So far this is just one for me but it won't go away. I'll ask the dentist this week about it.

I have them in my throat,esophogus, mouth and leasions on my tongue, also my throat swells and it is hard to swallow. my gi said it is definately cd, and pred for me is the only thing that takes the awful flare away, I'm on imuran that kinda helps my small bowel, but doesn't put a dent in my throat and mouth issues, I'm doing another endoscopy in 3 weeks and he will try to stretch out my throat with balloon, but it is very painful. magic mouthwash is just a bandaid i need it to come from med's internal healing, I've had cd for 40 years and this is one of my biggest hurdles to overcome, it can't be fixed surgically, not like my other surgeries.

I agree the magic mouthwash is a bandaid but at least it can allow a person to eat without crying from the pain. When your mouth and throat is peppered there is no safe way to chew.

I used mouthwash from Orajel (pretty sure) that was specifically for ulcers/canker sores. They are such a pain! I get them once in a while when starting a bad flare... Been a couple months since I had any major ones. I used to suck on ice cubes and also rinse my mouth out with warm sal***er. Now be careful; the sal***er will sting like all heck; but it seemed to help me! Usually the sores in my mouth lasted about 2-3 weeks after I started my "regimen."

yea magic moutwash is benadryl,lydocaine and malox. I evan have straight lydocaine that I gargle with but its real thick kinda like gargleing with snot, very thick, but it numbs my mouth and tongue, but pred take it down, buti hate taking that much pred, it's a real problem, I'm on state disability from my cd and have applied for ssdi, i can't work in a 8-5 type of job, at times I have to take pain med's because my mouht and tongue is on FIRE

I get them in my mouth and throat very bad too once soo bad i could hardly breath my throat was so swollen.  I use rinse too you have to be careful too once mine got infected and abcessed.  My face swelled up though it was a tooth but no my gums abcessed from a sore in my lower gums getting infected (perioabcess).  I have never even had a cavity in my life lol.  when that happened i got a new rinse and also rinsed with peroxide.  This actually helped heel everything up quickly.

If having a hard time eating try ice cream and popsicles (its a good excuse for a treat lol) and it nums and helps your throat its all i could eat when mine was severely bad.

The first time I got really sick I had horrible mouth ulcers - it started with one on my uvula in the back of my throat - my primary care doctor (an older guy) had NO idea and thought it might be a cold sore (?) and told me I just had a bad flu that was going around - I went to my dermatologist and they called in 3 other drs and none of them had any idea. It wasn't until i finally I switched back to my old primary care dr (and practically had to drag myself into her office at that point I was so sick) and she was the one who realized I had Crohn's from the markers I had (i.e. mouth ulcers, Erythema Nodosum, etc). At that point I could barely speak, the pain was so terrible. It was mere hours later I was put in the hospital on a morphine drip, thank goodness.

Long story short, drs are people too and some of them are idiots. Or sometimes these things are subjective and even a trained eye can't tell if they haven't seen anything like it before. I have definitely had doctors look at me like I have seven heads from some of my Crohn's symptoms. :) So I wouldn't necessarily rely on your dentist to know what is going on - if he/she does then you are lucky but I'd get it checked out from your GI or at least a second opinion.
