Self-Employed and uninsured with Crohns -Hopefully to Change

Hopefully most people with Crohn's disease have Health Insurance....But I don't..

When my husband and I was just starting a small business, I find out that I have Crohn's Disease... Now I'm un-Insurable...

Hopefully this new law will make it where I have the right to purchase health insurance.. I'm not asking for Free Insurance, Just the same opportunity as everyone else to be able to buy insurance . It could mean life or death for alot of uninsured americans... Not all of us are uninsured for the same reasons.

Are there any others out there that can't buy insurance because of CROHNS?

I don't have health insurance and have never found any I could afford.

Some states off a high risk insurance pool. I have had insurance in both Oregon and Washington through the insurance pool. It's not cheap, but it's a lot cheaper than all the drug and doctor bills. If you google "high risk insurance pool" with your state name, you should find out if you have one.

I don't know where you live, but I'm in California and my husband and I own a small business... If you get a business group insurance, (which requires 2 employees or more in CA) You cannot be refused for a pre-existing condition.. Although the insurance we have is expensive, (almost a thousand dollars a month for both of us) It definately pays for itself when I think of all the tests and medications I would have to have paid for if I didn't have insurance...

no. the cost was simply too high to pay. 1000 a month is practically a house payment. its simply ridiculous. the affordability as a result of crohns is a yes, but indirectly, since intermitent job loss prevents affordability. If I called for a quote I doubt I would get outright denial, as that is the business they are in... and I figure I would be able to get a quote, I probably, however, would laugh at the number. lotta if and and buts, so I should try and see.

I finally got insurance after a few years of not having it. I was unable to afford the premiums because I have this preexisting condition. I got insurance through a group policy through work. I don't think I ever would have been able to get insurance otherwise. It didn't make sense because the plans I could afford didn't cover anything and would have made me inelligible for patient assistance programs that paid for my medication. I don't think healthcare reform in this country will be what it should be but I do hope, if anything, it gives people with chronic conditions some options.

yeah, mine is not cheap - through the WA high risk pool. It's $735/month for just me (41 yr). In Oregon the comparable plan was $440. But theres no state income tax in WA, I figure that's the difference.
