Upper GI and Barium Enema

I was wondering if they give you the results for these right after you wake up, like they do in Colonoscopies? And also, are you awake for the Barium Enema?? Or are you asleep for both? Thanks!

I haven't had barium enema for a few years but from what i can remember they kind of talk you through it as they do the test but send the official results to your doctor. They don't usually put you to sleep and its not uncomfortable generally. Only uncomfortable if you bowel is very inflamed. I now have a j pouch, so i now have a barium swallow where they ask you to drink 2 cups of the most disgusting stuff, they then x ray your abdo every 20 mins and track the barium through. Dont know if this helps or hinders but it is a few years now and things may have changes. Also this is in Britain so might be different. Good Luck

Nanners-- The nurse at the hospital said that I would be put to sleep for the Upper GI but I wasnt sure about the Barium Enema..

I wonder if you are having an Endoscopy instead of an Upper GI. Whenever I have had an Upper GI I have never been sedated.

Then they must be doing something different that what I have had and she is using the wrong terminology. In my Upper GI tests I had to drink 3 bottles of Barium and then they did an xray. There was nothing done that required me to be sedated. Then there is the small bowel follow thru where you drink two cups of barium and then they take xrays every 20 min or so until it reaches your colon, no reason to be sedated with that one either. The only tests I have ever done that were with sedation was the (Upper) Endoscopy and Colonoscopy. And believe me I have had just about every test they can run ran. Good luck!

I think this is the test she was referring to. She explained it as a Colonoscopy through my mouth. They insert a camera that follows through to my small intestine... Is that an Endoscopy?? If so, that is what I will be having done. I just didnt know with both if they sedate me for the one and leave me awake for the other?? lol I know confusing!

I am pretty sure then you are getting an "Upper" Endoscopy. I wish they sedated you during a Barium Enema, but then I guess you wouldn't be able to hold the Barium in if you were sedated.
