i doubt stem cells will pan out as a viable treatment option, esp since only 20% of Crohn's patients have the nod2 mutation (though they will probably get around to all of the so called mutations)

also getting a stem cell transplant is not some quick, painless procedure

True, but 20% is better than 0%. Having IBD isn't quick and painless either.

The article was very interesting. I'm always glad to see research going on, but since they are only at the "mouse" stage, I don't predict anything concrete for decades. By the time they get around to "humans", who knows where we will all be. I'm sorry to sound so negative, but there are so many different types of  trials and research etc, but it takes forever! The only thing that seems to get accomplished, is the drug companies coming out with stronger and stronger drugs with dangerous side effects. I have to have hope though that there is a miracle waiting to be discovered.

Same old info recycled and repackaged for years WSJ did however get their biz plugs in there.

All sorts of diseases get mistaken for something else* One that particularly irritates me is how some people will confuse schizophrenia with multiple personality disorder... //-_-\\'... Ah, the uninformed masses...

That's a ridiculously inexcusable mistake by the WSJ. I wrote an email to the author to let her know.

I've seen that mistake made by too many journalists and given the little press Inflammatory Bowel Disease gets as it is... sigh.

But hey, let's not poo poo the research, it's too easy to do. Poo poo, get it? heh heh heh

My step-father emailed that article to me earlier. That was my first response to him - hard to take it serious when they can't get the inflammatory part of the name right. Drives me nuts when people use the wrong term (irritable). It just continues to lead to people not being able to differentiate between IBS and IBD.

On the flip side, I'm still hopeful for stem cells. Just hope that they get something figured out while I'm around to appreciate it! I still swear by Prochymal, but that doesn't really mean much anymore. So sad when everything else failed and it was so remarkable. Maybe there's hope on the horizon.

Also, I like the position they took re drugs. Drugs work and change in diet does not help. Tell that to positive response SCD and Makers folks.

The first thing I noticed was the "irritable bowel" thing, too! I couldn't believe that the WSJ would print something like that. I'm glad they're at least trying to write about it, though. My brother has type 1 diabetes, and when he was diagnosed the doctors told my dad a cure was coming in the next decade or so. That was 1985. It's hard to get the right balance of optimism and realism. I'm still trying to figure that one out...

Well Ive only been recently diagnosed with CD and can only wish it was "irritable". I agree, the world, probably especially journalists need to recognize the difference between IBS and IBD. The difference in tx and mx is totally different. But good on you for posting any information which gives us hope. I know I will do the same, after all the more we know the better informed and prepared we can be - we may even be able to avoid, or at least minimalize complications.
Keep an eye out for who's doing what! Thanks

Thought you would like to know that they are doing something past the 'mouse' stage here in the uk. Not sure of the ins and outs of it at the moment though. A local support group has been set up near to where I live(still in it's infancy-only had two meetings) but one of the men there has been accepted for some sort of stem cell treatment at a large hospital in the next county.

At our next meeting I will try and find out some more
