I'm due for another colonoscopy and within the past year my gastro has started using total sedation, with propofol I think. For my previous c-scope I was partially sedated. So, what's it like afterward -- much grogginess and does it last long?

My last colonoscopy I was fully sedated, mainly as since the last one I've developed anxiety in hospitals, I'm not sure what they used though. I have absolutely no memory of the procedure or anything after except getting home. Last time I could remember pretty much everything. And the drowsiness lasted longer, I think I was in recovery asleep for about an hour. After I got home and had a nap I wasn't too bad but don't think I was myself until the following day.

I use Propofol all the time for c-scopes.  I love the stuff.  As soon as they push it, I am out.  It doesn't take long to come out of it.  As soon as they stop pushing it, you start to wake up.  Ususally within 20-30 minutes I am completely awake and aware.  Never had a side effect to it.

Propofol is not total sedation in the sense of a general anethetic. It seems to be more effective in inducing twillight sleep and amnesia than the old valium cocktail. And everything I have seen on it says it resolves quickly for a faster alertness level. As one who does scopes with no sedation, I have not had it, but the consensus seems to be that it is superior to the old mixture.

My doc's nurse anesthesiologist used propofol and it was great, as I usually get nauseous while coming out from under most types of anesthesia. All I remember was her telling me that I might feel a funny sensation on the back of my tongue and then it was lights out. Woke up in recovery. I felt like myself within 10 minutes or so, other than being wicked hungry and dehydrated. They gave me a pepsi and that seemed to help. Good luck!

Propofol (diprivan) is WONDERFUL from the aspect of you are out like a light immediatly and you wake up quickly clear headed and aware.

The drawback to it is that there is no antidote or reversal agent for it. In most states ONLY an anesthesiologist can administer it thereby increasing the cost of the C-scope.

If I want to be sedated for my C-scope, Propofol is MY choice hands down, no contest.

You'll remember going there and all the other parts of the procedure, you're just out cold for the scope.
I have to profofol for my scopes because I developed a resistance to Versed. (Sedation most commonly used)
I wouldn't want it any other way. Good luck!!

Hmmm...I'm one of those ones that can have funny reactions to certain meds...I have or can wake up with nightmares...however with propofol...GREAT...had pretty feelings and dreams :-)

One of my older doctors had given me something else for my scopes, and I woke up screaming...

I am also one of those who has to get full sedation, cuz that twilight stuff (versed combo), I wake up in the middle in pain...even this last time and fully asleep, my doc could not go as far as he wanted as my colon was super spastic...but I don't remember a thing...woohooo

Uhhh, there is a national shortage of Propofol. Hospitals are only issued limited dosing and not enough for all procedures. Plenty of other stuff available though.

According to my colonoscopy report I was given Midazolam (Versed) and Pethidine (Demerol).

To be honest, I would be quite happy to be knocked out cold after the experience of my last colonoscopy. Versed didn't cut the mustard. I require the feeling of no pain whatsoever, not even a teensy bit, let alone huge amounts of it.

I woke up sobbing post colo last week, GI doc tried to say it was air---uh no it would be my rt side. Gave me dilaudid IV-worked well enough to get my backside out of there. . .:)

Ok, I had my c-scope with propofol on Friday.

Overall it went well.

I was completely out of it within about 2-3 seconds of the propofol administration, and the next thing I knew, I was semi-waking up in the recovery room a good hour, maybe hour and a half later - and with a very sore throat. It took me probably 30 minutes more of falling in/out of sleep before I really woke up, at which point they had me get up and get dressed. And I still had a really sore throat - I mean, a REALLY sore throat. I asked if I'd been intubated during the procedure, but the recovery nurse didn't know, and the anesthesiologist and GI were long gone by then. I'm almost positive that I had to have been; otherwise, how to explain the fact that my throat felt like somebody had stuck something down in there and gouged me in the epiglottis?

My girlfriend took me home, and I took a nap for an hour, then got up and we watched TV. I was mildly groggy the rest of the day.

Compared to previous scopes with fentanyl and versed, this one was a different recovery. Mentally I recovered quicker, and I remember the recovery much clearer (with fentanyl/versed, I don't even remember how I got home!). However, physically, I was a bit groggier/more tired the rest of the day with the propofol than with the fentanyl/versed.

Really, the only issue was the sore throat. I know that feeling well because I've had multiple surgeries where I had to be intubated, and in one of them they scratched my throat raw - just like they must have done this time.

I don't know what they gave me for my last c-scope, but I do remember the nurse pushing the drug in my IV and I was done for. Next thing I knew I was in recovery wrapped in a blanket. They got me dressed, my boyfriend drove me home, and I took a nap. A few hours later I was awake but a little groggy. I fully intend to be knocked totally out for every c-scope I have, and my doctor seems to be fine with that. He's never asked me otherwise if I want it any other way, so that must be his standard M.O.

Hmm, I don't remember being too groggy after my partial sedation. My GE said we could do it again that way. I'd rather minimize downtime afterward, and the c-scope itself really wasn't bad.

I definitely felt more groggy afterwards with propofol than with fentanyl/versed.

Whether that would be the same for you, though, I have no idea.

That must have been one h*ll of a c-scope, Beave, to reach far enough to give you a sore throat!!!!

For those who were still groggy after propofol, check your records, they probably gave you fentanyl as well and even some phenergan.

I had no problems at all with propofol - knocks me out in 5 seconds flat, I take a nice nap, and no hangover feeling like with the Demerol/Versed combo.

I just wanted to make a quick follow up to my posts.

Previously I mentioned being rather groggy after waking up from a colonoscopy with propofol.

Today I had an appointment with my GI to go over the colonoscopy, and he said that they had to give me more than double the usual amount of propofol to keep me sedated. That's probably why I was groggier than expected the next few hours.

Not sure what was used. Was scoped in 02 and 09. Was out for both. Awake and getting dressed within an hr after.

C-scope 10+ years ago was Versed/Demerol combo.  Was out cold for an hour after the procedure was done, and went home and slept the day away.

Fentenyl/ Propofol combo for recent C-scope (two months ago).  Was perfect!  Woke up 20 minutes after procedure was over.  Was lightheaded, but alert on the way home.  Completely recall entire post-scope conversation with the Dr.  (I don't recall my conversation with Dr after the last scope with Versed/Demerol combo)  Took about an hour nap at home, and was fine the rest of the day...mildly sleepy.  The only thing I didn't like was the propofol stung/hurt soooo bad when going in the vein.  Thankfully it knocked me out too fast to really complain.

I'm not sure what they use on me now but they will never use Demerol again.  Whatever my first GI gave me, I woke up partially during the middle of the procedure and in my head, it seemed like I was screaming bloody murder, but everyone else just heard me mumbling.  So, he gave me Demerol to knock me back out and I ended up having a bad reaction to it and having quite an experience in recovery. I hyperventilated and cried for an hour or two (and thought that the oxygen sensor on my finger was a nintendo controller and I was playing Mario Bros).  So, my chart now says NO DEMEROL.  But, whatever they normally give now me knocks me out (I try to fight it as long as I can so I can ask the dr. a few questions before the procedure) and I think I'm usually in recovery for about an hour sleeping it off.  After taking a nap at home, I'm usually fine.

Wow, I asked this over 2 months ago?? I finally had my colonoscopy and they gave me propofol. It was great! The doc started pushing it, 20 seconds later I said I could start to feel it, and that's all I can remember. When I was out I had some wonderful dream, but can't remember exactly what it was. After waking up I was groggy and unsteady, but that quickly dissipated and after about 20 minutes I felt just about normal. Thanks everybody for the input!
