well just got back from the hospital after being there most of the day with him, eventually they decided to take his appendix out as they suspected appendicitis, when he was in recovery they said his appendix were normal, they did check a portion of his colon because of me having crohns but obviously not all of it.
Is it possible that crohns could be mistaken for appendicitis????? I hope for his sake he hasn't got crohns but now I am wondering if his appendix were normal what the problem is! This is the 2nd time in 2 months he has had really bad cramps in 2 months too.
has anybody else been thought to have appendicitis when actually it has been crohns???

I'm sorry for the pain and uncertainty your son and you are going through. I'm 51 yrs old and when I was 14 I presented classic Appendicitis with pain and guarding in lower right quadrant, elevated white blood count. During surgery the next day, the surgeon was surprise to find the end of my Ileum red, swollen, and ulcerated. Not sure what he had, they pulled a med. book and laid it on my chest he said to compare pictures with what I had. They called it Regional Enteritis and yes they took my appendix while they were there so that mistake would not happen again. So, yes, it can appear as appendicitis.

Two months before I got the crohns diagnosis they thought it was appendicitis. I had abdominal pain and vomiting. In the CT scan my appendix was blocked by my slightly inflamed colon, which they thought was an effect of having an inflamed appendix. At first I got a little better but then I started having more and more stomach problems. They eventually decided that I had been experiencing an unusual onset of CD.

Bingo, same thing happened to me.

I went into emergency with lower right quadrant pain. Elevated blood levels, etc. They said it was appendicitis, and wheeled me off to surgery.

Next day I wake up and find out I have Crohn's. It's a very common thing to get diagnosed this way. The symptoms are similar. They opened me up and found a perfectly normal appendix. They took it out anyway, and started rummaging around my entrails and found the ulceration.

Mine has been referred to as "Regional Enteritis", that's just a fancy way of saying Crohn's disease.

Sorry to hear that your son  is in hospital.

My son was rushed in April 09(not diagnosed with Crohns until November 09). His appendix was removed and histology reports indicated that he had appendicitis and peritonitis. I had hoped that the pains he had been experiencing were due to his appendix rumbling and that he would then be free of pain.

Now move forward to November 09, the Crohns was found in my son directly under his appendectomy scar !

So in his case he had two things going on however I did read somewhere that it appears that for whatever reason one appears to be related to the other.

Fingers crossed that he will be free of Crohns!

about 15 years after my diagnosis and five years or so before my emergency resection I went to the ER with bad right side pain and they deemed it was my appendix and removed it. Turned out my appendix was normal and 5 years later I ended up having to have a emergency resection because I was completely obstructed. So yes, it seems pretty common for them to think that its appendicitis when its really Crohns. I sure hope your son doesn't have Crohns though. Hugs~

At my last Remicade pre-surgery, the other person who was having Remicade had the exact same thing, except they already knew that he had Crohn's!

My daughter was in her first year at college when she was rushed to ER for what they thought was appendicitis. However, the Cat scan showed normal appendix but a stricture in the TI, "suspicious for Crohn's."

It's quite common to mistake Crohn's for appendicitis. Crohn's can have lower right pain, which is also indicative of appendicitis. That's how I was diagnosed, I though my appendix was having an attack but they found my small intestine was jacked up.

He is still in hospital, minus his appendix and no actual conclusion still. He is still in agony in his stomach , but not where they took the appendix out , it is higher up and more to the right side of his belly button .He ate very little yesterday but everytime he did eat he promptly vomitted, they have been giving him antibiotics through his canular now as he wasn't keeping them down orally.The doctors don't seem to be doing very much which is quite worrying, they know my history of crohns and I thought they would have atleast done more blood tests if nothing else!!
The nurse did say that they probably wouldnt do any scan etc because of him just having his appendix out,but surely they would see what was part of the op and what wasn't on a scan,or x-ray!?!
I hope he hasn't got crohns and it was just a case of severe gastro or something simple, he's only 13 yrs old, and would hate to think he may have to go through what we go through!

Keeping you both in my prayers. Maybe you should be a little more forceful and have them do some more testing. If for nothing more than to give you some peace of mind.

seen the doctor today and now they say its mesenteric adenitis which affects the mesentry (covering of the intestines) which apparently can happen in children, that is a presumption but they have not actually ruled out crohns either!
He is still in hospital but looks like he may be out tomorrow......he does look a lot better than he did yesterday, but he has been on 3 lots of antibiotics including metronidazole (flagyl) since being in hospital, which maybe is masking a small flare ....maybe I'm looking into it deeply but it is quite a coincidence that the mesenteric adenitis can affect the small intestines.

well now he's home and they say it is mesenteric adenitis, but i am still a bit dubious about that been as it also affects the intestines.....they said if it doesnt clear up then it may still be an onset of something else, namely crohns....we have to keep an eye on him and see if he gets any more stomach complaints but still a concern that this is not the first time in a couple of months....he has had a bad stomach about 3 times other than this one in the past 2 months!!!

Sorry you and your son are going thru this! My son will be 8 on Sat. And when we were in the ER around xmas, they were concerned that it was his appedix

He also started with stomach pains back in Sept and they grew worse and worse, We have just been diagonsed with CD as of Monday.

Hugo's Mom.... sorry to hear your son has CD, it must be hard on you as your son is only 8. Atleast with mine being slightly older I think he understands a little more. We still dont know whats happening with him, but he seems ok atm,touch wood! Obviously still sore form the appendix op and has a small 'stomach ache' but we will watch him carefully and monitor any stomach issues he has for the time being.
