My husband was diagnosed last year at age 33. His father has it (developed it in his 20's) and his sister has it (developed it when she was 9 or 10.)

I firmly believe that his trigger was the smallpox vaccine he had to take before being deployed with the Army.

I worry to death about our kids.....

My parents both have IBD, my mom has fibromayalgia, my dad has rheumatoid arthritis. I was doomed from the get-go.

I have had no other family members with Crohns. Ever. But I have had an infection with helicobacter pylori, and was treated with 3 kinds of antibiotics to get rid of it. I got my Crohns problems within three weeks after the helicobacter, got tested again and again for a possible new helicobacter pylori infection, but nothing there. After one year of continued testing for helicobacter my doctors gave up on me. 3 more years still sick, THEN they found out they could test for small intestines Crohns. Yeah, right, ....but here I am. Another Crohns patient.

As far as my case is concerned, I am the only one in the family with any IBD. Diagnosed in 2007 but symptomatic since 2005. When my first daughter was born in 2005 I picked up a 24hr stomach bug while in the hospital and that was the beginning of all my symptoms. I started out with chronic canker sores - lots of them for two years - and progressed to perianal crohn's with distal colitis. Been on it all, from the 5-ASAs to Remicade. No pharmacological drugs have helped.

I believe the use of antibiotics to be a factor. Even when taken as a child, symptoms of disease (ie. crohn's, UC, rheumatoid arthritis, FM, cancer...) can manifest years later.

No family history of CD but my paternal granfather has IBS which we beleive is a mild CD. I think my CD is genetic but I always wonder what exactly triggered it. I had several UTIs over a period of 6 months.....CD Symptoms started a few months after the problem cleared up. I have always wondered if that might have anything to do with my CD......

I was diagnosed in 2006. No one in my family has ever had any digestive problems whatsoever. The closest thing we can come up with is I have an uncle with rheumatoid arthritis. Considering both diseases are immune disorders that cause inflammation we thought maybe they could be related. So far I am the only one with crohn's, but I have a cousin who has been having problems. Haven't heard from her in a couple of months so I'm not sure if she has been diagnosed or if it was something else going on that just cleared up.

My problems first started in 2005 when my family moved for the fourth or fifth time in childhood. I was a teenager and a little upset about the move. The country girl didn't really fit in very well in the city. The social butterfly I used to be retreated back into its cacoon so it became difficult to make friends. I wonder sometimes if the stress of being an overweight fifteen year old middle class country girl moving to a school full of kids that read glamour magazine and drove bmw's to their model photo shoots and cheerleading practice had anything to do with triggering the crohn's. The 100 lbs were a great side effect though! Except my family thought I was doing drugs. :(

No one that I know of in my family has Crohns. A diverticulitis caused by cancer treatments though. And my mom said that my grandma and her siblings; certain ones had stomach issues with food.

I'm the only one in my large family. I too wonder why me and where did this come from. Hopefully someday they will find an answer and a cure.

Hugo's Mom- was your son ever on antibiotics? It could be a fungus link to CD and UC. (Antibiotics are mycotoxins.)         Now you hit it on the nose.  I hav been in the hospital   With heavy chest cold  after about 5 day  vas no change.   The doctor discribed   $700  worth of  antibiotic   I had to  pay for it  bifore they given me   the medication.   For days later       "operate  or die"   had  my beatiful  CD infection.     only  cut my large intestine out   left the rest to suffer.  (I Now my  circle around  at that time only  620  had the same infection in ontario.)      I have been isolated  for a month  to prevent the spred of that.  Since then  I only can eat  what dos not contain any  Yeast   No beer  no vine   Be   carefull what they give you.   Bionic man.

so sorry such a young child has this awful disease. My mother had a problem with her colon and had it removed but they said it was diverticulosis. Who knows if anything else was involved? It did cure her to have it all out as far as I know. I had an aunt who got colitis later in life and an uncle with RA, so we have some auto immune diseases in the family. Good luck to you and your son. The forum is great for support if you need it.
