I've been miserable since last Tuesday 6/29. I haven't been able to keep any food down since Tuesday. I've been throwing up all day and it's starting to kill my insides. Bad stomach cramps and tightness from this. I've been taking Zofran and it's not helping at all. Normally when I take the Zofran ODT it helps but not this time!! Any ideas? Would just a normal stomach bug last this long. I'm supposed to go in tomorrow for my normal blood work but going to cancel the appt. Probably not best to drive as I haven't been able to keep food down and the heat won't mix too well. Annoyed at this point. Call and leave a message for the nurse at the office tomorrow? Just seems pointless as they won't be able to do anything. Any suggestions?

I would try to keep your bloodwork appt, that way they can get the tests while your feeling crappy...and call the Dr tomorrow and tell them whats been going on...sometimes when I get like that I'm about to flare up, I take Phenagrin(sp?) if the Zofran isn't working, seems to be a bit stronger, but it also knocks me out so :/ Hope you feel better!!!

Where do you get the Phenagrin? Never heard of it before. Can I get that at a pharmacy or do I need an actual RX for it? I'm going to try and keep my appt it's at 3:15pm but it's about a 20min drive there and back. Trying to find a ride. We'll see. Thanks, I hope I feel better too! So over this.

need a script for it - it can be prescribed orally or in rectal suppository if ya can't keep the oral dosages down.  makes one pretty sleepy but after all you have been through that might be a blessing.  The oncall doc can call a script in to any over night pharmacy ie Walgreens.  hope you feel better.  Barb

Phenergan (promethazine is the generic name for it) is a wonder drug!!! I have a rx for it and it works so much better for me than zofran ever did (assuming I can take it and keep in in my stomach).

I have had viruses that lasted much longer than on the average person, so it is possible that this is a virus, but I would definitely call your GI to be safe. And like grumpy said, they make phenergan in suppository form, so if you can't swallow and keep a pill down, you can still get it into your system to help you. Maybe your GI could call in an rx and see if it helps.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. At this point will just go to bed and will call my PCP office in the morning. I've never taken a suppository before so would rather stick to orally. That's the one good thing about the Zofran ODT you can just put it under your tongue and it normally does it's thing. But if my Dr also recommends the suppository form I'll just suck it up and give it a try. Thanks again and have a nice night.

Just figured I'd give you all an update. At this point I'm thinking I need a new PCP!! I called the PCP and they basically told me that they can't do anything about it and get in touch with the GI. They are about 10min away and the GI is about an hour away at a big hospital. So what annoys me is that the PCP being my Dr as well should have to work with the GI to figure it out. So now this has been going on for more then a week. Still can't keep anything down. PCP said that it could be a side effect of the meds and that the GI needs to figure out what is causing this problem. Maybe I'm looking to into it and maybe the PCP is just doing what they are supposed to do in a situation like this. But it has been a week and you think they would offer some type of help!!

I have this problem with my PCP's office too....they always tell me that my problems are 'too complex' for them and to call my GI. Until recently, my GI was over 2 hours away, so that was a problem.

I'm sorry they're not being more help to you....I had a total breakdown on the phone with the nurse from my PCP's office one time because it's SO FRUSTRATING when you feel so bad and it seems like no one wants to help you. I hope you feel better soon. *hugs*

I'm glad I'm not the only one! It seems as though they are scared to help. If they do help it can't get worse will only help more then not getting help at all. You would think your PCP office would be more understanding considering your GI is over 2 hours away. I just don't understand why they have to be so difficult! Shouldn't take on patients if you aren't willing to help them. Plus the GI and the PCP should be working together to help their patients. I've had one with the nurse to at the PCP office I think I scared her. Haven't seen or spoken to her since!

The GI just called me back finally and said he can see me Friday at 11am. Wanted to know if I had any stress in my life that would cause this. That annoyed me as "stess" has never made me throw up ever. I said to him I have no stress the only stress I have is trying to find help so I stop throwing up. Probably wasn't the best thing to say might have pissed him off but oh well. Thank you Leysa! *hugs*

It may be side effecs, but the meds you are taking also inhibit your body's ability to fight infection.  So it is possible you are fighting a bug you just can't kick on your own.

I asked the the GI if it could be a bug and he told me no! Said it wouldn't last this long and that it would be getting better by now. But the PCP said when I saw her that it probably was a bug. So when I asked the GI what it could be... side effects from the meds, a bug or what. He just seemed clueless. Hoping it's just a bug and goes away soon. Hopefully he will give meds to fix it or figure it all out on Fri. I just want answers which at this point they don't seem capable of giving! I seem to get better answers on here from people without a medical degree! lol.

Hope the appt goes well tomorrow and you get some answers.

My PCP asked me recently what I "thought" my GI would want her to do! Same week, my GI saw me at the hospital for a procedure, reviewed labs but didn't "look" at the basic CBC results because that was the PCP's job. He missed that I was low sodium, etc and needed to be admitted for IV fluids. I didn't find out til I got home, crawled back in bed and the PCP called me hours later to say she had reviewed the lab results and needed me to come in. She was shocked that I had actually been at hospital with GI and he hadn't even looked. Very frustrating.

I agree with other posts that the coordination between PCP and GI should be much better.

Wow that would be very frusterating huckleberry! The doctor that screwed up should pick up the bill for the IV infusion! Thank you hoping for answers! I'm thinking it's probably one of the meds causing this but who knows! I'm going to mention to my GI that I would like if he could communicate more to my PCP and they should work as a team like they agreed months ago.
