Do you ever have formed poo?

Do you guys ever have formed poo after a bowel resection?  I had a right hemicolectomy in '08 and have had diarrhea ever since. Some days it might be slightly mushy but for the most part it's pretty liquidy.  Does that a sign of a constant flare up or is it just  normal after resection? Sorry for the TMI!!

No. Sometimes the reason is, that when you had your resection, they took the ileo-cecal valve. If you don't know,
then I would ask your doctor, it would be in your surgery notes.

I had a resection a year ago and have never had a formed stool. It ranges from pudding to water in consistency but it's not formed. My dr was shocked that I was still having D but I have always had it even when I was in remission.

Do you have urgency with your BMs? Like one minute you are fine and the next you have to go NOW? Also, I'm having trouble finishing a meal before I feel the urge to go. It would be nice to make it all the way through eating before heading off to the bathroom.

Very very very rarely do I have formed stool.  I also have to go to the bathroom halfway through a meal as well.

Hello, I was reading your signature and saw you are on Entocort EC (not sure if you are still on it). When I was on Entocort EC it made my D way worse then before I was on it. It got so bad that a few times I was out and ended up using the bathroom on myself because it wouldn't stay in at all. Since I've been off of it I still have soft stools a D but I am able to run to a bathroom. I've been undertreated for 3 years now and the only medication I am on is Asacol and antibiotics on and off so now I am having rectal issues. Saw GI doctor yesterday and they want me on Remicaid or Humira after I finish 2 weeks of antibiotics (Flagyl and augmentin, I can't take cipro because I am allergic). I am so scared about the Remi or Humira and actually wrote a post today but with the positive responses I am feeling a little better about them. I am basically caught between a rock and a hard place because your not suppose to take Remi or Humira with infection or open wounds and I have 3 seton drains with a lot of drainage but the doctors say that if I don't get on one of the meds I could lose my rectum :-(.

Sorry for writing so much but if you are still on the entocort maybe you should talk to your doctor. I have read other post on here about people who have had the same problem as me on Entocort.....just a thought

Sweetnakira: I am not currently on Entocort, I weaned off in May. I am currently just on the pentasa but will probably start Imuran in August when I go back to the GI doctor.

WantRelief, Have you tried Asacol instead of using pentasa? Maybe that will help :-/

I may have a solid BM once or twice a week, but not too often. They're usually not liquid, so I've never been too concerned.

Wow, I was thinking after a resection you would have normal bowel movements... Surgery has been coming up more often when I talk with my doc so I guess I need to ask him about this.


I had formed stools the first couple weeks I was on just pentasa, but thats the only time in my life I can remember having 'normal' stools (I'm sure I had them when I was younger though)

I have formed poos most of the time now.

After my resection my consultant said I would have D as I have a "short cut" now. So, he prescribed Questran. The directions are to mix it in water and drink it and it was so disgusting I actually said I preferred to deal with the D! This was very stupid if me (isn't hindsight great) as I waited over a year to try it again. And got married and went on my honeymoon inbetween!

I tried it again a year later and this time somebody recommended mixing it with fruit juice instead and after trying it with Orange (yuk) and Apple (revolting) I found that Cranberry works a treat!

I have this once a day but can up it to twice if needed and I have mine about 10 minutes before my evening meal.

It slows things down - I don't know how but it does.

I still have urgent times and halfway through eating times but they are much MUCH less.

And I have even had constipation which I was very excited about the first time (my husband laughed) :)

Not since my first resection 30 years ago. It's getting very old....and so am I.

I had my ileocecal valve removed (about 6 inches was taken in total) last fall. Most of the time I have formed stool, and usually it's just once a day. Every once in awhile, I have a bout of D for no apparent reason. It's not urgent, and usually just happens once a day, so I don't worry about it too much. I'm usually back to normal the next day anyway.
