Thank goodness for this forum. Otherwise I would have a lot of unanswered questions. I am having a draining seton placement surgery on 8/6/10. Currently I take Cimzia. I asked the CR surgeon if I should stop taking Cimizia due to abscesses and current infection. She told me to ask my GI. I asked my GI and he told me to ask Cimzia. I called Cimzia and they told me to ask my doctor. Very frustrating! Anyone have experience with having surgery while on biologics? Did you have to stop taking the medicine until after the surgery? Thank you!

I've had procedures done while on cimzia (liver dialation/stent) and while on remicade (2 anal/rectal surgeries)...so I don't think it rules it out per se...and just a note, I'm not a physician, just giving my experience with my docs...JMHO is that you and your doc need to be aware that infections can be more likely and respond accordingly...meaning, just you need to be more alert to fevers, anything really being off...

I was told to stay on Cimzia/Remicade (whichever I was on at the time I was dealing with that current abscess/fistula). The surgeon gave me a seton (twice) and each time said after 3 months of Remicade/Cimzia treatment, she'd pull the seton. To me this says stay on it...

Thank you both for your responses. This is helpful. I think I will stay on it. Between my pharmacist and this forum I get more questions answered than I do from my doctors.

After you have this surgery you need to start looking for another GI too.

I'm on Cimzia and having a resection on Monday. My surgeon said for me to stay on it before but wants to see me after before I get my next shots. He thinks we may just stop it all together if my fistula is doing well.

I am looking for a new GI. I am really getting tired of not being able to get simple questions answered, not being able to get into GI ofc quickly, and on and on. My CR surgeon's ofc called me and told me she said since I have an infection it's probably best to skip injections for 1 month. My GI's ofc left me a vc msg today, but their ofc was closed by the time I got the vc msg so I have no idea what they're calling about.
