Surgery worry

i would not worry. first you may not even need the tube. I did not when i had my resection surgery. My surgeon told me that they do not use them anymore unless there is a complication from the surgery.  In past they always used them, but found it added no value.  So not sure what your surgeon/s practice is, but i would ask about it.

Thanks, thats a relief. I will ask at pre op check (not sure when that is yet). Sorry you are not having much luck with meds, I know the feeling currently on Pred, Metho, Pentasa and have come off Remi. Was hoping surgery will put me in a good starting place to control this rotten disease - had 2 good days this week and today can't leave the house cos stomach too unstable. are we having fun yet ? Of course we are, we just haven't been told how much we can enjoy it !!

I have had a NG tube a few times. It does not hurt at all to get it taken out. Actually its a relief when it is out. But as mentioned above, they really aren't using them much anymore. Good luck!

My fear is the putting them in, which is done, if at all, while you are out for the surgery. I had all 3 resections by the same surgeon. the first 2 I had an N/G tube last one no tube. Getting it out is a piece of cake. Really easy compared to all the other stuff we go through. Most likely you won't have one, but if you do, you will be happy to have it out and will only feel relief. It is annoying to have it in, more than painful. Getting it out is just a few seconds of a quick pull and that's it. Nothing to be worried about at all.

I have had this DD a long time. Back when I was first Dx'd, in the early 80's, I had to have an NG tube a couple times. Usually they will try to put it in when you are knocked out. Getting it past the gag reflex is as frustrating for them as it is for you. The 2nd time I had it, they put it in while I was awake and they had me drinking water through a straw while they slipped it down.

Taking it out is a piece of cake. Dr literally grabs and pulls and it is out in less than a second. It feels kinda wierd sliding out but it doesn't hurt and because it is going opposite the gag reflex and it's out so fast, you don't even notice it.

Not telling you this to make you worry. I always like to know what I can expect, it's SO much better than the not knowing. I do know that the NG tube is not used that often any more, so unless you have an old school Dr., chances are you won't even have one. Good luck!

My daughter had the tube when she woke up from her 'open' resection in 2008. She is easily nauseated and I think she may have needed it. She has a deviated septum and they did make a bloody mess trying to send it down that side first--so if you have a deviated septum, tell them before hand.

I had surgery myself recently and they did not use a tube at first. Soon after, I began to vomit which they didn't want, so they had to put the tube down while I was awake. I apparently also have a problem with one side of my nose so after trying that several times, they switched to the the other side. They gave me no water--I was not allowed anything at that point. They just told me to keep swallowing. It was very uncomfortable and I really felt like I couldn't even talk with it in there but the worse was getting it in place. After about 24 hours, they pulled it out--quickly--and I was never so thankful--no problem with that. I am telling you all this because if I had the option I would rather wake up with one already in than getting it later when you are awake.
