Ever since I had my kidney surgery it has messed up my digestive tract.  But I have started eating a little more lately and thought for sure that I had gained at least 5 pounds back.  Had to go see my ortho doc to get my knees shot up today (now too scared to do my knee replacement), and when the nurse weighed me I was the same as I was when weighed a couple of weeks ago.  Humph!!

 

I do have alot more diarhea now than the constipation I always had before, so I am sure that isn't helping the situation.  I am not sure about you, but I always like to keep a little extra weight on me in the good times, just in case a flare hits.  See the GI tomorrow, and will see what he says.  I was thinking maybe my Crohns was flaring since the surgery because I haven't felt my best in awhile, but did blood tests (and on a day when I felt horrible) and wouldn't you know it, they all came back perfect.   I don't think I have had IBS attacks this past 9 weeks, so I wonder whats going on that I can't gain my weight back, and still have the upset tummy every morning.  Okay vent over:)

Thanks Kiwi!! I am not sure what is going on. Its not a Crohns flare, per my blood tests, and as I said before its not an IBS attack. And I know its not bacterial overgrowth as I have had that multiple times, and am not bloating, so something is messed up in there. Hopefully, I will find out something today. Hugs!

Haha Vicky, thats what my siblings call me. They are all morbidly obese, and I the only skinny one.

what I havew experienced in the past surgeries, for me anyway when they open me up it is wide open, no lap surgery for me, it is super invasive, that being said nanners just from opening you up and messing with you in there, because of your priors, it doesn't take much to mess things up in there, so I think you have to be patient and hopefully it is just a rough patch while your healing inside, maybe??

I agree with Artist Guy, that the surgery has probably messed you up big time. But that being said, can you add in a couple of 100 calorie snacks a day. If you do that for a few weeks that should help, even if you are having more D, you should absorb some of the calories and 100 calorie snacks aren't big enough to ruin your appetite.

I'll say it once more: Its all explained in the "Cooking Well for the Unwell" book by Eileen Behan. Really worth the $4 or so that I spent.

I hope you get some answers from your doctor though.

Been thinking about you Nanners ... hope you get some answers soon. Think sometimes when we have multiple things going on the medics tend to focus on the known/obvious and maybe should think outside the square a bit more ;)

After my bowel resection last year I got sicker every day after the surgery. I am sure they all thought I was a drama queen but it turned out the excrutiating pain was from a kidney stone blocking my right ureter - ended up with urosepsis and a nephrostomy and months in an out of hospital. Was pretty scary and has made me realise other bits (like kidneys) can cause real grief if their symptoms 'clash' with the crohns. Kidney issues and crohns do seem to go hand in hand and I know you have other things as well :(

I lost far more weight with the kidney issues than I ever have with the crohns so please make sure you take very good care of yourself and tell your medics all of your very sensible concerns {hug}

Well saw the GI yesterday. He says that I am just extremely sensitive due to my many surgeries. He told me not to worry, that things will get back to normal soon hopefully. I have agreed to get back to him if things continue and will discuss tests with him if I don't get feeling more like my old self soon. One thing I did find out on my own before my appt, is another probiotic my husband and I had added shortly after my surgery, may be the culprit of all the diarrhea. I was reading it and it had soy in it, and I am very sensitive to soy products. So I stopped it the day before my appt, and I haven't had any diarrhea since. So maybe I am on to something.

I am also hoping that getting back to work next week, will help me get back into my usual routine. The GI did say that of some of the foods I usually don't have problems with that have since been a problem, for me to try them again later. It may just be a temporary thing and just needs time. So for now its going to be a wait and see, but I will try to hope for the best. Thanks for your well wishes.

Were you weighed on the same scales? Only ask because from experience we have found that even the hospital scales can be out from each other in different clinics by quite a few lb.

I can understand your frustration but hopefully you will get there(slowly but surely)

Yeah vixen I have been weighed on two different scales and the weight is the same. I lost 12 much needed pounds, that I would like to get a little of it back.

Nanners,

My hubby is destined to be skinny mickey so you are in good company.  I suspect you may have found a culprit in the soy and hopefully cutting that out of your daily routine will help.

I would be glad to send you 15-20 lbs my friend.  Then we could both be just right !

I guess being called 'extremely sensitive' could be a compliment ;P

Hi! I'm new to the forum thing, so I beg your patience.

I also have a lot of problems gaining or keeping weight. I have found that drinking Boost plus, a supplemental drink with extra protein and calories, has greatly helped me to gain those precious pounds.

Meal replacement bars as snacks have also been helpful for me. I like the dark cocolate ones that Abbot makes (found in stores like Targt and Wal-Mart).

FWIW:

Recent research suggests that IBS diagnosed in IBDers who appear to be in remission is likely to be low level IBD inflammation not IBS.

This is based on measurement of calprotectin levels in stool which has been shown to be an excellent correlate of actual disease activity.

Can give you the reference if you want it.

Also:

You can try adding Boost like someone else suggested. if you can tolerate high levels of fat, substituting or adding cream and regular butter has been helpful to some other CDers I know.

RLS I am not flaring. Actually I think I found the culprit, a probiotic I added in that had too much soy for my body.

I sure hope stopping this soy inclusive probiotic does the trick for you, and you start feeling back to normal again, and pack on those 12 lbs!!!

Good luck with work, it'll probably be really tiring the first week. I feel that way after a vacation - given that you're coming back from a rough surgery, you're probably going to really feel it the first week. But as you improve with your health, and get back into a routine, your body will adjust and you'll be back to your normal self soon.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.
