Bowel resection

I recently had to endure the wonderful colonoscopy, due to a severe stricture in my rectum. The consultant struggled to pass the scope. I now have to have a resection, with a temporary ileostomy. Can anyone give me an idea of.....a) How long I will need to be in hospital (have 3 children on my own)    b) The convalescent period (A full time job) and finally c) What happens if you need to pass wind if you have a bag???!!!

Had Crohns for 20 years am on Azathioprine, Pentasa, stabilising dose of Prednisolone and weekly Humira injections. Oops! forgot also 3 monthly B12 injections as well!

dpends on the person and the operation. if your having a temp ostomy, your not going to want to run right home and start back to normal. its gonna be 6-8 weeks just to get your strength back. and starting work again will be difficult with the ostomy being new and getting used to the daily or multi times daily fitting of the appliance and leaks etc.. pass gas into the bag. it just fills up with air.. some have agas vent others do not. you wont beable to lift anything big for along time unless you want a hernia too. but hey good luck

Can't help with ileostomy, but I had resection 2 weeks ago, was in hospital 6 days in total (including day of op). First week home felt very tired and obviously had pain from wound site, but painkillers kept that under control, but I was able to do a few things like making my own lunch, make cups of tea, peel veg etc. You have to pace yourself and I do find being on my feet for too long makes me feel rough. I agree help at home would be a good idea, my kids have grown and flown and I am not sure I would be feeling as well as I do now if I had little ones to look after. I think rest when you need rest is probably the key. Sorry probably not much help but wish you all the best - good luck.

Had surgery on 9/24/2010
   -Two feet removed of small bowel close to the pelvis (the doctors could  not believe how anything, indluding liquids could have passed trough there
   -Two move feet of bowel removed close to ascending colon
   -One foot of ascending colon
8 inch incision down the middle of the belly
Expect to be at the hospitafor a week
Expect to be recovering at home for 3 weeks

Most important
Stay upright most of the time, this keeps the intestines properly positioned
Walk gently, even when you are in the hospital, at home walk at least 3 times a day 200 yards

If you feel no pain at certain times of the day, skip the pain medications, these slow down the bowel creating gas. I know others may have different opinions,
it has worked wonderfully for me. With all the stuff done to me above I only felt real pain the day after. Ocassionally I feel gas pain but not from the woundI.

Anyone has a different perspective on pain ?
