I am posting on this forum as there doesn't seem to be any other one appropriate.

I don't have Crohn's (thankfully) as I have recently had a sigmoidoscopy as there is Crohn's in my family and I developed a nasty abscess which ended with me in hospital in July.

The abscess was 'apple sized' and was incised and drained under general anaesthetic and every day for weeks I had to have it packed with dressing so it could heal inside out.

Almost 3 months on I still have a small open wound that is oozing brown goo. I am on my third lot of antibiotics and although I don't need internal dressings anymore I do have to apply some gauze and wear a pad every day. I can't have sex and I can't go swimming and I feel lousy.

Where the wound has healed there is a small skin tag that may be stopping it healing over completely but I am going back to the consultant in November.

Any advice or support would be welcomed.  I have read other postings where people seem to take months or more to completely heal and I am getting married in June and want to be back to normal way before then!

Hi,

Welcome! Abscesses are painful. I don't think you should wait until November to see the doctor. I would go now and have it tended to sooner than later. As long as it is draining that is a good thing, the infections isn't pooling inside building another abscess. But at the same time I think the doc needs to look at it incase something more needs to be done.

had the same thing- and the skin tags for me, unfortunately, never went away, but the drainage did... I had a big circle cut out of my bum area so guess there wasn't much left to drain. I tell my new drs that they are gonna see a funny looking butt when they do their first exam... lol... But like Julia said, you probably should go get it checked before November.

thanks :o) unfortunately I can't get an appointment before 2 Nov, they only hold clinics tues and fri and my workplace are not helpful when it comes to taking time off for anything! So have booked it for a tues I know I am already off. Shouldn't be like that when I am still recovering from something that is far from trivial! Hard enough trying to gain brownie points, am already in serious trouble for having had two months off sick (genuine absence of course!)
Am on penicillin as of today, two lots of Metronizadole don't seem to have done much except given me oral thrush! Have to see how it all goes!

Ow. You must have been in so much pain with an apple-sized abscess.

Bear in mind that people with Crohn's tend to heal more slowly "down there" so I hope you may heal more quickly than we do.

I'm so sorry you've had to go through this.

I had almost the same thing and mine oozed for almost a year before the doctor's realized I had crohns's. It would pop open at the worst times as well (usually vacation)...this happened as recently as July, which was exactly a year from when I had surgery. Now that my GI has me on Cimzia, it has not popped open (I'm keeping my fingers crossed). Hopefully they can get you straightened out before your wedding (congrats by the way). But just don't rush the sex thing....you don't want to do anymore damage or cause yourself anymore discomfort than you are already in. Good Luck!!
