So I'm getting married in a little over 2 weeks to a great guy smilewinkgrin and I couldn't be more nervous about my Crohn's. sad

My Crohn's has been active for the better part of the summer and it's calmed down a bit now. Still dealing with a lot of pressure at the site of my stricture (terminal ileum) a few hours after eating, 3-4 bathroom trips a day (down from 10), lots of tummy gurgling and a relatively crummy appetite.

Fiance and the families have been great about planning the wedding to keep me from stressing and making the intestines worse. But I'm starting to get a little nervous about surviving the actual day of the wedding....

Anybody get married while their Crohn's was active?? How do I get through the reception without running to the bathroom a ton of times? Doctor okay'd Immodium, but I've NEVER taken it before and I'm worried with the stricture because I have no idea how big it is. Do I stick only with safe foods (none of which on the menu are) or eat what I want? And if I do get sick, how do I not get stuff all over my dress?! :(

If anybody's gone through this, it'd be really helpful because I just started to get nervous about the Crohn's and the wedding...

1. take something for your nerves
2. take something for the D like lomotil or imodium.

Try both of the above before your wedding day to get a feel for how much you need..but if you just treat the D and not the nerves, the nerve will override the imodium and you'll still get the urge. Taking it beforehand will ensure you are mellow but not zombielike.

I personally would take 2 imodium or 4 lomotil , and then maybe a booster 1/2 dose every 4 hours or so. Where you've not had it before, you won't need much of it, but your nerves will be in overdrive.

Also, if you're very prone to D, you might consider a clear liquid diet the day of your wedding (prior to the reception) and the day before..don't be as stupid as me and make sure you have enough calories even with a clear fluid diet. You won't feel weak if you have things like powerade etc.

I got married back in March and had all the same symptoms as you did and i say Imodium all the way!!

I carry them in my bag all the time and if i know i have a important day or going somewhere without easy ascess to a loo i just have one wont go to the loo all day but the next day it just back to normal not worse just the same.

I say do it! Its the happiest day of you life and you dont want to be on the loo time goes quick as it is! Also if u had big dress like mine you will need a hand going to the loo and noone wants to do that lol.

i got out of the hospital a couple days before, puked the whole night before and barely made it through the reception. went back in the hospital next day... so hang in there and have a good time. it may just show you how much people love ya how they respond.. good luck

A couple of years ago, at our grandniece's wedding, the bride and groom came down with a miserable stomach virus (or possibly food poisoning) on the night before the wedding. The only thing that saved the day was my supply of Motofen (very similar to Lomotil), which I started handing out like candy. It let them get some sleep and make it through the ceremony and reception--although they were a little subdued. So a healthy dose of Lomotil or Immodium should get you through. Besides that, in my experience, most brides are too emotional (and worried about spilling things on their dress) to eat much, if anything. And you may feel a little more secure if you put a pad in your underwear, in case of leakage.

I agree with Tara I think you not only need to take Immodium but you need something for your nerves. With a flare going on you are also going to have alot of anxiety because you are worrying about all the "what if's". Maybe a low dose of Xanax and some Immodium will help you to have a more enjoyable day. Maybe eat lightly the day before to head off any problems. Good luck and congrats!

I had three wedding to go to this year and will be in two in 2011. I attended the weddings wasn't the bride but should still help you anyway. I was very nervous about going as I didn't want to have D or eat and then have D and be all nervous etc. I took 4 immodium and it worked like a charm. Didn't go at all. Try a dose that works for you before the actual wedding. You have about 2 weeks so each day try a new dose and see what works. THat way you'll know what works and won't be as nervous. I got married last May having been in hospital a couple of weeks earlier. I was on big doses of prednisone. My Crohn's doesn't give me the D, but it is in the last 2 inches of my colon so I get the bleeding, cramping and urgency. My strategy was to not really eat much that day. That way my system wasn't active. Also, we made the service short and we had no speeches except by the best man who made it short and sweet. That way I knew that I never had to hold it in during any part. I made sure to go to the washroom regularly when it was convenient. Everybody there knew my situation, and knew that I might need to run out. All of this relieved my anxiety, and I had a lovely time. I refused to have photos taken (moon face etc.!) but I got married to a wonderful man in front of my family and friends. In an ideal world I would have been able to enjoy the meal etc., but all of that fades away and I remember that everyone else loved the food and I loved that the evening gave much enjoyment to others. Relax and enjoy. If your doctor OK's immodium and/or anti-anxiety medication go for it if you want. I didn't use it and I did fine, so I'm sure you can too.
