Does anyone know what effect having Diebetes has with Crohn's

Im 46 and have had diebetes for almost 5 years and it was just about under control until being diagnosed with Crohn's last week.  I was given a perscription for Pentasa and Entocort EC

anyone with information would greatly help

Well, I'm not a doctor but it seems like entocort could be tricky if you're diabetic. I hope someone else answers! You might want to repost with a more direct title like Diabetes + Entocort risks.

I have ileitis and hypoglycemia. My biggest problem is that what I need to eat to control the hypoglycemia (protein, high fiber) is the exact opposite of what I need to eat for the intestinal stuff (easy to digest.)

Prednisone and Entocort both make your blood sugar levels rise and drop. Whenever I am on either I get steroid induced type 2 diabetes. My A1C jumped last time to 9.8 when I was on prednisone and dropped to the mid 5's once I was off it for a month. Are you taking anything for your diabetes? I was put on metformin for a while but it really made my crohn's go crazy and I had to switch to avandia.

Sorry I missed these posts a few days ago, (im new to this) I have been on Metformin for awhile now along with a medication that brings your blood sugar's down quickly (cant recall the name) my A1C has been pretty steady around 6 but with all these new meds they put me on for the Chrons Im afraid it will jump. Im feeling lows alot, probably due to the fact Im afraid to eat certain foods to bring the pain back

I'm another that gets diabetes when on predinisone. I was also put on diaformin (metformin) but I was getting levels as high as 17 when the doses of pred were high. As soon as I reduced the pred, my sugar levels dropped. Now I'm off pred my levels are back to normal. Is the other med you're on diamicron? (it may be marketed under a different name where you are, I am in Australia). My Mother is diabetic and is on both metformin and diamicron and her levels can drop fairly quickly. I would think that with both of these meds, your sugar levels should be ok on entocort. I would suggest checking your levels regularly, and talking to your GI.

I guess Im just scared really? my weight is good now and I dont want to gain nor lose alot of weight being on medication that has that as a side effect. My GI isnt the best for communicating whats going on with me. I guess its just good knowing the actually disease name (after many months of tests) doesnt make it any easier, especially when I dont know much about Crohn's yet.

If you find any good recipes let me know I have had CD for 23 years and my boyfriend sufferes from uncontrolled diabetes and being on food stamps (he on his own and myself on my own) but he also as I stated in a diff post has 1 son with aspergers making it tough to get through a month on the amount we are given.  If you happen to create or come across any good recipes that are good for both CD and Diabetes please email me thru the sites email option I am in desperate need his A1c was over 9 last check and yesterday when he went to the ER for something unrelated his glucose was over 300

Im sorry to hear of your recent troubles. I am recently diagnosed with CD and have not yet figured out what I can and cannot eat. Having diabetes makes it almost impossible to control. One fights the other. I wouldnt be to concerned about the Glucose over 300, mine spikes all the time (even with being on Metformin and Glyberide) I would be concerned however about the A1C over 9, it NEEDS to come down to a 6 or organs will start to become damaged. As far as being in desperate mode.....I hope the state you live in helps you out with the cost of the medication, I went to pick up my CD meds and it was well over 1900.00 Dollars. Without insurance with insurance it still costs over 200.00 a Month

yes his A1C was 9.1 last time it was checked he goes back the 19th again to the VA for a check

I just know that it's hard to figure out what to eat because what's good for the diabetes can be bad for Crohn's, especially since I have strictures and have to watch fiber.
