Flu shot time again/immunosuppressants?

I was wondering if there is any concern with getting the flu shot while taking Immunosuppressants?

My daughter is taking Entocort and Imuran. She did get the H1n1 last year while on just Imuran. Not sure how adding Entocort changes things.

The only real concern with the flu shot (as long as you are getting the inactive virus shot, not the live virus) for people on immune suppressants is whether or not the immune system is too suppressed to actually produce an immune response sufficient to develop antibodies to the flu. When your body is exposed the inactivated virus, your immune system sees that and starts producing the antibodies needed to ward it off. When your body comes in contact with the real flu virus, because it has seen something similar with the inactive virus and has developed antibodies against it, it can ward it off.

However, when you are immune suppressed (depending on how badly), your body may not produce the antibodies to the flu virus. So, even if you do get the flu shot, the immune suppressed may not be protected against getting the flu. But I don't see any harm in getting the flu shot - just be cautious anyway (sounds like you are anyway), and keep your daughter away from sick people, and plenty of hand washing.

Flu shots are fine for all Crohnies. But as mentioned above it must not be the live virus (which is the flumist). The shots are dead virus. Just had mine about a month ago. Good luck!

I'd say ask your doctor: they've said yes for me some years, and no the others. And I'm pretty sure this was because of the state of my health and my medications rather than whether the medication was live or not.
