I work in mental health, so while I don't see a therapist specifically for my disease, I do have access to and will talk to them occasionally about different things that I am going thru, the stressors that I'm under, and anxieties that I have.
The basis behind talk therapy is to help you understand WHY you are experiencing the anxiety, what is causing it, and what you can do to help you deal with it. Sometimes just having someone to talk to about your disease, even if they don't know that much about it, can take some weight off. She may not have known much about crohn's at your first visit, but my guess is she will do some research into it before your next one.
Some people have trouble with therapy because they are not the type to lay out all their problems, or want to burden people with what they are going thru. Or even just talking with a stranger can be difficult. The most important thing about therapy is to find someone you like, someone you connect with. She can be the 'best to deal with people who have diseases' but if your personalities conflict, you won't get anything out of it.
If you are not on any anti-anxiety medication, she may be able to refer you to a psychiatrist who can prescribe medication for anxiety or depression if that is needed or wanted. Good luck in getting things figured out. Don't give up too soon, therapy is not usually a quick fix and can take more than a couple sessions to see results. The first couple are about getting to know you and what you are wanting to get out of therapy so that a treament plan can be drawn up with goals to be achieved.
