I've been to Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN for Crohn's as well as other problems. Mayo Rochester is a 12 hr drive one way for us but well worth the drive.
I was Dx'd at Mayo Rochester in early 1976 and had my resection at Mayo in early 1978. The care was excellent and my recovery was easy and uneventful. I was then blessed w/a 20 year remission of symptoms. Mayo Rochester is the EPITOME of efficiency!!! They do NOT waste your time when you go there from out of town. Back in 1976 I completed all testing and was Dx'd w/in 3 days. Today, generally, you would have surgery w/in 2 days after Dx or testing if resection should be indicated. In 1978 I went to Mayo thru their affiliated St Mary's Hospital ER department and had my resection the second day. I don't know how long it takes to get an initial appointment but once you've been a patient there regardless of how long ago you can usually get an appointment w/in one week. For instance, I didn't go to Mayo for myself (made trips w/others in the family thru the years) from 1978 until my Crohn's returned and I requested an appointment in 1999. I had an appointment w/in 1 week of my phone call and could have had an earlier appointment if I hadn't had some committments at home. Established patients are given priority in making appointments. The atmosphere at Mayo Rochester is WONDERFUL and ALL staff down to the janitors friendly and helpful.
Even if you drive to Mayo Rochester, its most efficient and less expensive to use the shuttle service from the various motels and hotels than to drive and park near the clinic. There are at least 4 motels w/in 1-2 blocks of the clinic. Our last visit 2 years ago we stayed at Econo-Lodge out near the fairgrounds, excellent breakfasts free at the motel, reasonably priced lunch at the Methodist Hospital cafeteria (and the food was pretty good) and dinner at a restaurant next to Econo-Lodge (I forget, I think a Perkins). There are multiple "fine dining" restaurants w/in 1-3 blocks of the clinic. There's plenty of info available online regarding hotel accomodations and maps of Rochester in relation to the clinic.
I have no experience w/Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL or Scottsdale, AZ.
I've also been to Cleveland Clinic altho that was some 9-10 years ago. Nearby hotel accomodations were not as reasonably priced or convenient nor choices as numerous. Nor was dining as convenient or reasonably priced. CC is only a 5 hour drive one way for us. I found Mayo Rochester much more attuned and geared to out of town "guests".
Massachusetts General in Boston is also w/in the top 5 ranked GI departments (I think #3).
