Anal skin tag as sign of impending flare?

DH grew a new tag in July - 1 month after his resection.

Are they a sign of a flare?  He has two others that appeared 3 and 5 years ago, but since we didn't know he had Crohn's he just thought they were hemmies. 

And really.... tags can't be removed??

Most of us with Crohns have skin tags. I think its just part of having Crohns. One of our members PB4 had her's removed and hasn't been the same since (and not in a good way). Hugs!

I have tonnes of them for years now and they are not supposed to be removed as far as i know, risky in healing, infection, bleeding etc. I do not associate them with the sign if an impending flare but i am not a dr- so maybe u should check with him/her to be sure?

I've had them for years, but mine never went away while in remission. GI never mentioned them and I just assumed that they were 'normal' hemorrhoids. Thanks for the new info!  Glad I didn't seek medical removal!!!

So, in other words, when a new one pops up, it doesn't mean he's flaring internally.  Right?  They appear independent from flares.

mine developed after i had an abcess surgically drained and a part of my bottom removed... they just kinda grew there. they have never went away but there seems to be a couple more there now than there were years ago when i had the surgery. i don't relate them to being inflamed but it wouldn't hurt to ask the dr. r they causing any pain? mine get sore and irritated when my crohns is flaring and my C is worse.

I have Ulcerative Colitis & Was wondering if skin tags are common amongst people with this. I had a very very tiny one, it had been there for quite sometime, but in the last 2 months or so, it has become larger, just a little smaller than say a thumb nail. It's really sore at times and swells. I have another one, which is a little bigger but has been there for a very long time. So not so worried about that one, it doesn't bother me what so ever. So are skin tags common amongst people with UC. Can only find info about Crohns.

I have one that appeared about 2 years into my remission. It only got irritated when I went to the bathroom when I wiped too much. Though it started to get inflamed and irritated right before I started flaring.

I'd never get it removed though because of the high risk of infection...

Mine will swell up or become more tender the worse my Crohn's is...

MzM20 - I don't know of tags being related to UC. I was originally diagnosed as UC. My inflammation (from a scope) showed UC pattern - continuous, first level of tissue, etc. As time went on, I developed more and more signs that it was actually Crohn's. My inflammation still tends to be continuous, but there are also skip areas and deeper ulcers now. My biopsy showed UC. But I also have a fistula, so... Have you asked your doctor about that?

Yes, Nanners is right...I have terrible issues with my "perianal crohn's skin tags"...they are infact related to crohn's only and NEVER with UC...perianal crohn's skin tags are more common with CDers that have their colon/rectom involved, a small % of CDers get them because a small % of CDers have their colon/rectom involved even though CD can affect any part of the GI tract from mouth to anus (when affecting the anus, it's generally with the anal tags). It's more common for CD to affect the small intestines.

My CD actually started with perianal crohn's skin tags and I was a teenager at the time, CD did not affect me in any other way (as I was told my tags were actually hemmies) until after I had my first baby in my early 20's..then my tags flared horribly (such bad pain that my pubic bone ached like crazy) still being told they were just hemmies (even though I complaind to my GP that I was oddly starting to have more than one BM/day which was not normal for me) she insisted they were just hemmies and sent me off for an emergency surgery on them...the surgeon (whom clearly did not know her stuff like she should have) also agreed they were just hemmies but she banded them rather than cutting them off....and although they shouldn't have even been banded (as it just has kept them in a flared state being large/hard all of the time) had she cut them off they would have forever remained an open wound.

I was told my a very good colo-rectal surgeon after the fact that like a script of cortifoam would have taken them out of the flare they were in...also at that time (when I mentioned above that I complained to my GP about starting to have more frequency) days after having my skin tags banded (by istake of course) CD hit me so hard internally it wasn't even funny, affecting my rectom, colon and small intestine all at once.

Do not try and get them removed, the good surgeon told me the only time it was safe was when they shrink completely down, then they could snip them off right in the office with topical freezing, but even that wouldn't guarantee that new ones wouldn't grow back.
