Afters being severely dehydrated for like 2 weeks (from bad to horrible), I was hospitalized and I am kinda okay now. list of what happened;

1. Got really sick, low low immune system
2. Dehydration started
3. Abcess to fistula
4. Flagyl (poision pills dear god)
5. drains (still is and i was hospitalized last friday, released this sunday).
6. Take myself off flagyl (did more harm as it totally killed my appetite and I lost twenty pounds x.x)


I am now been feeling backed up since like saturday and also I have not been needing to urinate a lot (I do try to pee like every 2-5 hours and sometimes i do and sometimes I don't. Also a little with straining with bowel movements.

I am wondering what two things mean mainly and what I should do, should I be worrying about my urine not being a lot and what does this backed up feeling mean.

I'm not really sure I have any advice but I just wanted to say I had a horrible time on flagyl, it was the worst!

How much are you drinking, fluid-wise? I know I need to drink at least 60 ounces of water (I weigh 105) to just stay mostly hydrated. If I feel like I'm getting dehydrated, I go grab gatorade or smart water. Dehydration can do lots of things that are no fun. It can also cause C - being backed up.

Have you taken any stool softeners to see if that helps things start moving again?

Flagyl is horrible on me too. I can't imagine how some people are on it so long. I despise the taste in the mouth, but the worst of it is what it does to me all around. Last time I took it, I ended up in the hospital with dehydration, high fever, etc. It sent my inflammation (already bad) through the roof! I was taking probiotics with it too (well, off hour, not at the same time). It also is known to cause lack of appetite. I hardly think about eating when I'm on it.

Fluid wise I drank 1 liter of pepsi, 1.5 cups of water and half a quart of gatorade, so maybe 47-50 ounces today.

You really should call your doctor. If flagyl is giving you really bad side effects there are probably other antibiotics that would work and be less of a problem.

It sounds like you are getting worse. It's really a good idea to call your doc when you're having new symptoms and you're that sick.

I actually feel 3 times better and I don't need flagyl for anything as my temp is normal (98.7), my fistula is nice and clean, and I don't feel weird at all aside from being backed up and not needing to urinate a lot. I stopped taking it sunday at 10am

From thursday (last week) to today:

Thursday: Not in hospital, feeling like utter crap
Friday admitted to ER, 1 liter of IV fluid. Feeling like I just have the flu. At middle of the night another bag is added 2 liters total
Saturday feeling even better another bad, another bag added sometime mid day.
Sunday feeling even more better had half bad and remicade (i think the stupid nurse didn't give me the whole bag cause it was not empty in total and just said it was back flow, I still feel weird about that maybe its something to be worried about.)
Monday: released from hospital day 1 was not hungry/thirsty I was just tired (still on flagyl and was friday-sunday till 10am).
Tuesday: felt a little better had one frozen eggroll (mmm good), and a salisberry steak dinner (might go make a turkey one right now to finish this gatorade off with).
Wednesday: same deal, food food drink drink feeling even better, I feel awesome right now aside from being backed up and I am actually more and more hungry.

I am not getting worse I am getting better rsl ahaha.

I agree with Patricia. Flagyl is a rough med for a lot of people, but you need to work with your doc to see if he can move you to a different antibiotic.

Drink lots of electrolytes (pedialyte, gatorade), you don't sound like you are well hydrated. Please call your doc for a consult.

Well I have an appointment with him tomarrow so I will see what he says (my main Dr (Dr Ivor Hill) is at some confrence I got a personal call from him today but my mother answered (I am 17) as I was sleeping and I could not ask my questions I *needed* to ask. But honestly the flagyl was prescribed before the abscessed drained, and its drained now and the drainage is barely any and when it is a thick mucus only, also thank you Patricia :]

Hey Joe -

So we are not doctors here. We cannot diagnose your problems.

We can tell you general things or compare notes on stuff.

So, here's some common sense advice. Since you asked.

If you are feeling better but are now constipated and can't pee then I suspect you are not *actually* better. I think you are worried too or you wouldn't be posting about this.

As a general rule, when you have been that sick and have an abscess that is draining you need to stay on the antibiotics for the full prescribed course. If the abx is making you sick (flagyl is really bad for that) then you call the doctor and tell them - hey I need something else. Or I need something to help manage the side effects.

Just cause you started feeling better doesn't mean the infection is gone. If it's still there you have only killed off the weakest bacteria and left the strong ones who could survive despite the flagyl. So now, if those bugs are still there, you are likely to get a much worse infection that requires stronger medicine for longer.

And if you still have a drain in I am pretty sure it is a really bad idea for you to strain when you use the toilet.

When I was hospitilized I was given antibiotics for my colon that caused nausea.  Then they wondered at the hospital why I couldn't keep my food down, Without being a doctor I knew why.

I think I am being too worried about not peeing as I peed this morning probably like 250CC, and I asked my mother if she asked him about the flagyl and she said yes and that he said to stay off and done worry about it. It doesn't "drain drip" it more comes out thick snot mucus and dries to form a kinda wet scab. Also no I am not taking steroids as my bones and joints are already pretty bad since I took them a lot in my early childhood (9-14). I was prescribed it by a head surgeon that looked at it on my ER trip mind you, not my actual GI so yeah.

Hi Joe and welcome to Healingwell. For the constipation issue I use stool softners nightly in order to keep things softer and easier to pass. I suffer with more constipation than diarrhea, so have been using them nightly for a long time. Hugs!
