Saw the GI today - back on flagyl

Hubby saw the GI today. He says he's having malabsorption issues, and doesn't think it is because of inflammation. He felt we needed to control his diet better to see which foods are causing him problems, but we have been doing that - right now, all he eats is fish and rice or chicken and rice, or crackers, or chicken noodle soup, because that's all that even slightly works for him. I asked him about elemental diets, since he's having problems even his bland plain diet, and I think that helped him understand that this isn't a diet issue (like him eating things that don't normally sit well with him).

So, he's doing 2 things. He put him back on a 10 day course of flagyl (for if it is bacterial overgrowth), and also is getting a CT enterography to check for any strictures or inflammation that maybe causing him problems. The CT is on Friday.

The doc really doesn't think this is inflammation related since hubby doesn't have usual signs of crohn's - just bloating and gas, and an unsettled feeling, no cramps or real diarrhea.

I'm going to keep my fingers crossed and hope that the flagyl does him good, and this is just sibo.

Hi i eat the same diet as your husband for 6 months now, i had some diarrhea.. its more like loose foul smelling stools and excessive gas. i always had some kind of mild colitis. iam 28 years old and it just gotten worst after i did my service in the army.. crapy food.. . i have stress..as docs say, but i dontthink itsonly due to that.. i had a colonoscopy and it was clean (no chrons or anything else there only small inflamations wich was insignificant the doc sed) and i also had a gastroscopy and he "accidentaly" found i had hiatus hernia.. wich had cause me a small ulcer on my esophagus, i took nexium for that for 4 months.. and for my colitis (IBS) doraleen or buscopan helps like 40% , i still have some problems when i eat a food like sweets, spicy, spaggeti , pork, and many other. i am still looking to see what i have , after 6 months .. like 4 days ago i started having itchy ankles and all over my body at night. and small red dots on my ankles . i ve heard its related to chron or other gi diseases, but ddocs say i dont have chron or celiac or anything like that.. i ve cheked for bacteria in a stool calture 2 times, i ve cheked for parasites once.. they say it might need more times for that to see. but eosinophisl would be up in the blood test. i ve done echos to my liver and pangreas, i did blood tests, i ve tested even for aids , i also have a hernia at my back from when i did taekwnodo lol.. and a varicocele i dont know how i got that.. on left testacle side.. its not anoying me .. i could remove it if i f wanted. i talked with my docs juat now they sed it cant be chrons once again.. some guy on the net here says that those symptoms here could be parasties... hmm shall i tart treating in blind?? lol :) best of luck to hubby

Flagyl can be very helpful, it jump-started me out of my flare last year. The problem with antibiotics is that they kill both the good and bad bacteria in your gut. Sometimes this can create a opportunistic void that bad bacteria like C Diff can take hold. You may research this on your own but I recommend taking Saccharomyces boulardii to prevent C Diff or other bad guys from repopulating your gut.

S. Boulardii is a probiotic yeast that is immune to antibiotics. It can be found in any health store and under the brand name Florastor. Some studies have shown that it is also helpful for Crohn’s. It may be a good idea to also include another conventional probiotic to augment it.

Yeah, since my hubby has had problems with c-diff, he continues to take 4 caps of Florastor to combat c-diff. He also takes 2 packets of vsl3 every day. So I think he's covered on the probiotics (I hope).

Anyway, he started his flagyl this afternoon. The doc kept him on flagyl because flagyl also treats c-diff - and so is unlikely to cause c-diff. However, I find that my hubby has horribly stinky gas on flagyl. Is that a normal reaction? Is that because of bacteria dying off?

Any theories on why flagyl seems to give him horribly smelly gas?

Maybe its just the med causing the stinkies??? Or possibly the SIBO. I can't remember if I had stinky gas, I think I did. Hugs~

To GEORGEMG7 sounds like you might possibly have a small intestine bacterial overgrowth. You might want to ask the doc if that is a possibility of being the cause of your symptoms. Good luck!

Thanks a lot for the answer. I called my doctors today.. they all say the itchy ankles could be from the medicine . specially the nexium but i ve stoped it for 5 days now.. so i dont know , could it be doraleen ?(its for stoping the bowl movents ). i ll go to a dermatologist again tomorow. i ve taken a lot of antibiotics in my life due to sensitivity to tonsils. ects.. and i am allergic in spring.. grass ects. but 3 months ago i took medicine for elicobacter pylori wich i was positive on a test. the doc sed that it hadnt created me an ulcer but it was just there.. so i had to remove it .. so shouldnt the antibiotics have killed most of the bacteria?.. ( 10 days with claricide and amoxil 500 gr) so i am always thinking about fungus on my gi track but all the doctors dont think so .. since the stool calture didnt show anything or the biopsy . i some times take ultra levure wich is probiotic it helps only a little. anxiety makes my gi problems worst .. but i have to fight with multiple small or medium enemys.. like colitis esofagitis hiatus hernia ( + back problem.. disc hernia small one) and anciety comes easy.. could some bacteria have been growing and not been killed by those two antibiotics? i guess so . the period my problems started i was drinking too much coffee going to the gym sleeping too little, and eating junk food lol... be well !!and excuse my english!

Georgemg7, wow, you have a lot going on. hiatus hernia, h.pylori infection, and rashes. I'm so sorry you're going through this. I think the best thing you can do is to go back to the GI and see what diagnostic tests they can perform, so they can figure out what to treat you for. Hopefully you'll get answers soon.

Gail, I don't know why my hubby has smelly gas with the flagyl, but I tell you, I think we should all go buy some stock in Glade. My house is full of glade candles, and glade plugins, and odor eliminators. :-D

If he can get a good night's sleep tonight, I think he'll be able to work from home tomorrow - there is no way he can be around work with the way he smells. I'm just glad he can work from home.

I'm getting better at finding things to be grateful for, even if things aren't perfect. :-)

I'll let you know how he's doing tomorrow.

I'm trying not to get my hopes too high, but I _think_ my hubby may be having some relief from the flagyl. He managed to actually get comfortable enough to get some sleep last night. I am a little worried about him because he has fast resting heartbeat - when he's just sitting up in front of a computer it is between 95-100 beats per minute. I mentioned this to the GI yesterday and he just said that it is because his body is under stress and he probably also has some anxiety and to just give it time and see if it goes away.

So I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Oh, whoopee, the colonoscopy was negative except for some "insignificant inflammation".

Hi, George, welcome to the forum. Crohn's does not always start in the terminal ileum close enough for a colonoscopy to detect it. Heck, mine started in the mid-ileum where no colonoscopy could ever detect it!

Did the doctor who did your scope mention if the "insignifcant" inflammation was in just one area or in a couple or several different areas? Crohn's tends to skip areas whereas UC tends to spread evenly.

Were you given a copy of the doctor's dictated results? Did he biopsy the inflamed area(s)? If he didn't he was remiss in not doing so.

I'd be pushing this doctor to order a CT endoscopy or even better yet the small intestine pill camera.

HI Chronietoo.. you got it right.. i will do the cam pill test.. and the inflamation inflitrations was in all the biopsys 5 of them colon ileum duodenal i think i ll read the copy i have and try to write the most important part.. 3 doctors seen my colonoscopy focusing mostly on the photos. wich where totaly clean.. the doctor performed the colonoscopy i hope he read the biopsys better than the others lol and he didnt worned me about the inflamations... why they are there if i am ok and he says that he is 100% sure its not chrons// i dont know .. but inflamation is inflamation.. but i had no elevated crp 2 times i cheked and normal blood tests. anyway i a doing the infay test to see if the elicobacter is gone in the 26th.and i also doing a R0 .. something test for autoimune diseases (blood test) and then i found a way to do the cam pill test cheap.. lol. i dont know i met an old guy with UC who had his large intentistine removed and scard me he toled me that the doctors i have are not good caus ethey should give me antiinflatory madicine and kortizone caus ewhat i have might be a small begining of UC. and he also sed the if ihe had ttake the right meds he would be better but yo uhave to catch it at the begining. THE only thin i can do is ask the doctors to explain tome all that small inflamed areas. thanks and i am to stressed to write with paragraphs

PS . iam much better and with no diaroia or one diaroia ecery 10 normal bowel movments.. still gas that doesnt comes out easy but hurts a lot less . no drugs. the itcynes must have been from nexium or doraleen .. as some docs sed too. the dermatologists didnt agry and sed it was nothing.. irelevant.I am the same with or without drugs.. so i must be taking the wrong ones??
