For those of you taking Methotrexate orally how do you space out your dose? My Rhuemy is putting my 2.5mg 4 times per week but I'm not really clear on how to space out this dose. Do I take it every other day? Besides hair loss what other side effects have you experienced?

I'm not sure it's dosed the same way for RA as it is for CD. If the Rheumy is rxing I would say you should ask him for more complete instructions.

It does sound like you should be on an every other day schedule to me but how many doses did he rx for a month? If it's truly 4x a week then the total rxd would be 18 I think. But if it's every other day then the total rxd would be 15.

And time of day may or may not be important.

My son takes 25 mg (10 2.5 mg tabs) once a week in the evening on Fridays. He hasn't had any noticeable side effects except he's very, very sensitive to the sun on Saturday and Sunday and somewhat more sensitive overall than he was before he started on it.

Think you need to give them a call next week.

Thanks Patricia. I'm not sure what the total amount of the script was for but when I got to the pharmacy I was told my insurance company would only let them fill for 1 month and was given 16 pills. The sensitivity to sunlight concerns me as the doctor told me that wasn't an issue. The more I read about methotrexate the more I am having second thoughts about taking it. I've come to terms with the Remicade as I've never had any side effects from it. The prednisone and the methotrexate scare me. I've had friends suffer from serious side effects from both and since neither is guaranteed to take away the pain from the arthritis and neuropathy I'm not really sure that I want to take either one. The Rheumy and the Neurologist keep telling me the 30mg of prednisone a day won't cause side effects but I don't buy it. Maybe it's time to try holistic treatments.

Methotrexate is one the meds best known to help with joint issues. I know a few members here who were miserable until they started using MTX. Maybe you should ask about the injections instead. I have heard you have less side effect issues on the shots. Hugs!

After meeting with the neurologist yesterday it seems clear to me that the neuropathy is the bigger issue than the arthritis. The pain I have now is nerve pain and most of the swelling from the arthritis is down which to me indicates that the prednisone did it's job for the arthritis. I'm going to call the Rheumy on Monday and tell her I've decided to hold off on the methotrexate for now and I'll take the pred as needed to keep the neuropathy in check. These are both new conditions for me which had a very sudden onset. I just don't want to jump into methotrexate if it isn't absolutely necessary.
