Im 15 and i just been put on Fersaday Ferrous Fumerate 322mg tablets, i have been on these about 2 months, i started taking them 2 times aday, it was 3, but due to the ridiculous amounts of side effects i had it lowered.
The side effects have been: Stomach Aches, Being sick, Loss of appetite, Constipation and Diarrheoa.
i can have C one day and D the next, toilets trips are constant and during school is very difficult. This is causing stomachs aches and some odd back pains.
Dairy products cause a lot of upset and too much can causing me vomiting it all up, so when eating out with friends i have to be very careful. I was just wondering if anyone else is having these problems???
Passing gas is very awkward due to the horrible smell...Am i the only one??

purple2500, you can bring lactase tablets with you when you are going out with friends - eat one or two before a dairy meal and that should eliminate the gas and nausea. You might have to try a few times to see how many pills you need vs. how much lactose your meal contains.

Sorry you are have to deal with this. Dairy was pothering me also, so I stopped eating it. Perhaps you can start a food diary to try to figure out what you can and cannot eat. Also, perhaps you can talk to your parents and ask them to help you to do some research on some diet changes that have helped other folks.

So you are taking Iron supplements and it's giving you belly problems right? Plus dairy is a problem for you too.

The dairy could be due to lactose intolerance or could be due to sensitivity to milk proteins - not the same thing.

For the dairy issues, you could do as others have suggested and try adding lactase tablets and doing a food diary. You could also use only Lactose-free milk and see if that helps. If it doesn't then it may be that you can't handle dairy products for now. You probably can eat yogurt and it might even help with your upset belly.

You should not use dairy products within 2 hours of taking iron so that might be making your symptoms worse.

My son has had good success using a time-release iron supplement when he has to have one. If he only needs a small amount of iron he takes a time release form that combines Vit. C, Vit. B and iron. You need Vit. C to absorb iron by the way. This combination is usually marketed as a "stress" formula and you can get it online or in most pharmacies.

When he needs more then we use a combo of the stress vitamin and a FerroSequel - a time release form of the same kind of iron.

Here's a really good article on oral Iron supplements that will help you a lot. There are 3 kinds of iron and the amount you need is different for each kind.
