Last night on TV there was a special on medical research into growing transplant organs. They first wash away all living cells from a heart ( in this case a rat heart) until left with only a matrix then they insert living cells from another animal,( rat ) and they grow a new organ. They were working with rodent hearts and even got them to beat. I am sure people parts are far away in the future, but a new colon , one that your body would not reject because its your cells , Hmmmmmm, wouldn't that be nice. Also pig bladder was being used for cell regrowth. A man grew a whole new finger tip complete with nail and prints after his was severed and lost. Thats the whole last joint from where it bends to the tip and there was not even a scar. They are using pig bladder in burn research to help grow new skin also.

 So guys, there is hope and who knows, that whole body transplant I keep talking about may happen after all.

Oh, that reminds me; there was a segment on late-night international radio over the weekend (BBC World Service, maybe?) that seemed to suggest that latent characteristics in stem cells will express themselves eventually. I was half-asleep at the time, but I *think* that suggested that diseases would end up recurring anyway? I can't remember - did anyone else hear a report about this?

Ivy, that's what I was thinking. That even if we could transplant our diseased bits, then surely
we would still disease it.....

Don't quote me, though, Dunny. As I said, I was half-asleep, and I may have misunderstood, misremembered, or just plain fallen asleep and dreamed up bits of information on my own :-). That's why I'm hoping someone else saw the report, or something similar.

If if the problems resurfaced you would at least get a clean start with all the damage gone?

Hey it took me lots of years to mess this body up , I could start with a new model that would run a little better.
Bunnypucker you dont need a new brain, just an overhaul of the original. maybe they can super charge it for you.

I've been watching this too...there is a lot of research on growing livers...and seeing as mine will need to be replaced at some point...it might be good news...

Hi bunny, you made me laugh so much and that's very healthy, keep on doing so, i may recover completely!
But yes, I don't know much about all these new biotech although I am M.Sc in bio, but what I think is that if overall you are not healthy, new organs will not remain healthy. This is the holistic medicine view and it makes sense. Unless you believe that health is a lotery or some naughty old guy up there is just playing dice

I haven't been following any of the recent medical news, but my father-in-law had a liver transplant and the disease messed up the new liver as well.  It would depend on the disease as to whether or not it would affect the new organs.  I would think with Crohn's that if they replaced everywhere in your body that had Crohn's in it, you wouldn't mess up your new organs.  It seems like you would start fresh...you would be genetically predisposed to get it, but it would take something to trigger the Crohn's to become active.  But, I'm no science major.  Not even close.   :-)

I'm going on the idea that when you have a resection, they reconnect to seemingly healthy bowel,
But, low and behold that darn disease comes back right at the anastomosis site, and my case at
a pretty rapid rate.

I think transplant is good for most things, but just not for auto immune IMHO :(

The thing I always thought of when BushBaby's regulations regarding embryotic stem cell research was going on was: how do they know what deleterious genes (?) that embryo had inherited from their parents and could those genes be passed on via the stem cells to the new recipient? I never even thought about the autoimmune aspect in ourselves. Duh.

And, sweety Crohnie, it is not only a genetical issue. Something else triggered the process, so this something else should be fixed, or rather the process should be reversed up to that first moment, i would believe.

Yes , maybe a preexistent illness would attack the new organs but , it may take a long time to happen and after all are we not trying to get as much quality of life as we can get. Another thing is because crohns is so debilitating to so many of us , we cant exercise like we should. New organs could help with that and also, say the old ticker is not in great shape due to this life style, a new one may add many years of better life. Having to not take rejection drugs will also add more years of better life. I am not saying its the answer all, but yes its a start.
C2, they were not using embryo stem cells. They isolate the patients own stem cells, the ones that have the genetic blue print for how that persons cells should be built , and then they use them. I dont understand how its done , but it could lead to a better life for people that need it most. Burn victims, birth defects in children like heart problems , injuries and lots of other things that shorten life could be helped.
