draining perianal abscess...

Hi everyone! I generally post on the UC forum, as that is my diagnosis, but figured with this topic you all would definitely be more helpful! Well, my 2nd perianal abscess just burst about an hour ago, after doing sitz bath soaks the past 2-3 days. The first abscess resulted in an RV fistula, which I've had now for almost 3 years. I called the GI on call, who is not my regular doctor, just to touch base & let him know what's going on. Surprisingly, he did not call in a script for antibiotcs- my usual GI did that with the last abscess, just to be on the safe side. The doctor on call told me as long as it's draining, it should be ok, & to keep up the sitz baths. What do you guys think, do you think antibiotics are necessary in a case like this? I'm totally bummed out- I can deal with the day to day symptoms of IBD, it's the added nonsense like abscesses & fistulas that really get me down. I won't be able to get in to see my usual GI 'til Wednesday, and wonder if an office visit will even be necessary at that point.

thanks for the feedback- they truly are the worst symptom ever! I've been doing the sitz baths, & just hoping it keeps draining- it's still swollen & sore though, so will probably have to be drained by a doctor in the next week or so. Love that. More time off work, more butt pain..... ugh!!!!!

A heavy, short course of Flagly (1,000mg/day) had a huge effect on clearing it up for me when I had two miserable, painful fistulae. Can't stay on that dose too long, but it worked very well for me when I was in bad shape. Hope you find relief.
