Walking after resection

I had a resection on 1 Feb 2011.  I am still unable to walk for more than 30 mins without aching and feeling very tired.  Is this normal.  I am going on holiday in 6 weeks and hope to be fairly fit by then. (PS its only a beach holiday)

Are you anemic? I had surgery in December [not a resection] and lost a lot of blood. In spite of two transfusions, I was still very anemic. It took me about 9 weeks to gain my strength back.

Can you get into your doctor to get a check-up? When is your follow-up for your surgery? I assume it will be sometime soon. I would tell them about the fatigue and aching.

I would defineately let the surgeon know how you are feeling. I would also request bloodwork be done for anemia but also to rule out another infection brewing. How long were you off pred before your surgery?

I have had my bloods done recently and I am not anemic. I did have a slight infection but that has cleared up. Before my surgery I had a large abscess and felt very unwell and was very unfit. Maybe I am just expecting too much of myself. I am due to see my surgeon next week, so I will have to ask then. I only get tired and ache when I walk. I came off pred in October

LMM, I had my resection two weeks after you and I'm still up only for a few minutes at a time. Having quite a bit of pain too.

You're only 4.5 weeks into recovery, so you still have at least another week and a half until you're technically mended, but I've heard ppl here say the fatigue can last for several more weeks after that.

I'm sure you'll be ok for your holiday, but FYI I recently read that we shouldn't expose the scar tissue to sunlight for several months after surgery.

When did you stop your pain meds?

Roni, I will be wearing a full swimsuit, so my scar will not see any sun. I dont think anyone else would want to see my scar either, as I had open surgery and its 12 inches long. I stopped taking my pain meds a week ago, I just have the odd painkiller if Im uncomfortable.

I had about an 8 inch incision. It's still scabbed, feels pretty tender inside too. I'm still taking pain meds, but hopefully in the next week, I can stop. Things are starting to get noticeably better for me now.

I hear ya about the full swimsuit. lol

Based on what I am reading above you may be right that you are expecting too much of yourself. 30 minutes of walking is a pretty good start. Perhaps you could increase by five minutes every other day or something like that??

I was in good shape before my laproscopic resection and I still needed a nap to get through the day when I went back to work 6 weeks later. I had fatigue for a few months after the surgery. I was amazed how long it took me to recover.

A 30 minute walk is pretty good 4.5 weeks after that type of resection. I had a resection back in Nov. and it took me a while to get my regular strength back. I am in my mid 50's and I'd say it took me 8 weeks to feel like myself again. You had a large incision, I did too, and that takes a long time to heal. Talk to your doc but I suspect you are doing fine.

I had issues like that however at the time i was also battling many infections I had wound infections and my CD came back almost immediately. I am on a high dose of meds and still have a mild to moderate flare going on. I know after my resections I walked the the huncthback for a while since it hurt to stand up strait with the wound infection. I did also (after the 2nd surgery 1 week after the 1st end up with a temp ostomy, a drainage bag for an internal abscess and a wound vac for the wound infection ...after the reversal I was hooked up to TPN trying to fix a fistula so I know how draining it can be but you are just still fresh from Sx I would inform your doc you could be aneimic, maybe not absorbing B12 propperly etc. You might just need a simple supplement to get you on the road to recovery.
