Starting methotrexate - any words of wisdom?

Hi - I am getting my first injection of methotrexate this week. It is one of my last options before surgery. Any words of advice for me? Side effects I should be aware of? How long does it take to work? Thanks for your help!i

My 3 year old son tried Methotrexate for a while. Didn't work for him, but it was well tolerated and if it does help your condition it is one of the better drugs to be on it seems as it actually increases white blood cell production so you will have an extra-strong immune function.

I've been taking the pills for about a month and my rheumy said it takes 8 -12 weeks for it to start working.

I have been taking Methotrexate for about 5 months. It has not helped me, but for some reason, none of the traditional meds have. I find that the legs are easier and less painful to apply the needle to. It is supposed to work in about 3 months time and then you are supposed to go on a maintanance level for a while after that. Keep in mind that this med should not be used long term as it will affect your liver (but it takes many years to do that, so you should be fine), make sure you doc has a plan ready for when the Methotrexate works (ie. Imuran, etc.). Hope this helps you!

I used to take methotrexate for psoriatic arthritis. I found it to be really effective for my arthritis, but during the first several weeks, the day I took it I had flu-like symptoms for the rest of the days. Nothing stomach related, but chills, body aches, feverish. The next  morning, I'd be good as new. Eventually that side effect disappeared, though. Don't know if it happens to everyone, but don't be alarmed if it does to you.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I am actually not expecting it to work, because nothing really has for me. Yes, I'm negative. I've literally been flaring for about 6 years straight and none of the "conventional" medicines have worked.

Anyhow, if methotrexate doesn't work, I am most likely off to London to do helminth therapy.
