Cipro+Flagyl cocktail?

Hi I was wondering if anyone can give me some insight: hubs has been having a terrible couple of weeks -- abdominal pain/bloating, more BMs than normal, cramps...he eventually asked for the evil Prednisone. His course on the pred went like this: 4 days of 40mg, 4 days of 30mg, 4 days of 20mg, 4 days of 15...he is on day 3 of the 15mg today.

He called his doc yesterday because he feels like he is not kicking this flare (oh and his Remicade was this Tuesday). I just picked up the scripts and its a 2-week course of Flagyl and Cipro....and therein lies my question: why antibiotics? I see that in some of your signatures some of you take these drugs and I was just wondering if they help, and why are you on them?

I'm currently on those antibiotics for a ten day course. Much to my surprise, they've been helping me tremendously. It def settled down my flare a bit. Went from a lot of bowel movements to like 4-5 semi-formed bowel movements a day and no blood. That was a nice surprise. However, it's not good to stay on antibiotics long term so I think my fun will be over soon. The reason I was on them is because I had a bad fistula and they wanted to try and help it until I got a seton stitch inserted.

Thanks for your reply, and glad it seems to be helping you! Once before, when hubs DID have a stubborn fistula, he did use this combo. But the remicade finally cleared that up and he has been relatively fine for the past 2 years or so. I popped out to google after making my post, and it seems that these to drugs are commonly used to treat the non-infectious symptoms of Crohn's. I sure hope he can get some relief soon. He is feeling a bit discouraged -- and the fear is starting to creep in that the remicade is no longer working.

Unfortunately, that's the situation that I faced. Remicade just randomly stopped working for me. I don't have antibodies to it and my serum levels are great for remicade. I just stopped responding to it which sucked. I've been flaring up for a long time now. So there's always a slight possibility that that could indeed be the case. Don't give up hope though. Maybe it's just the seasonal change making him feel like crap. Hopefully the cipro and flagyl will help him. Good luck!

I was in a horrendous flare when I was prescribed a 3 week course of Flagyl for my perianal abscess. Miraculously the Flagyl seemed to not only cure my abscess but also ended my flare. I have since taken advantage of my good fortune by taking probiotics every day since to keep the bad guy bacteria (such as C Diff) from regaining control of my gut. VSL#3 works, and S Boulardii is useful while actually on Flagyl because it is a probiotic yeast that cannot be killed by antbiotics. I credit watching my diet and regularly taking probiotics (good bacteria) for maintaining my remission.

Be sure to get some probiotic supplements - acidophilus might be best. Otherwise, the combination of antibiotics and prednisone can cause thrush or D. My daughter once developed oral thrush while on a course of steroid and Flagyl. 

The probiotic should be taken a couple of hours after taking the antibiotic. (If taken too soon, it might interfere with the antibiotic.)

just a thought but I get a presecription for thrush treatments (both top and bottom) at the same time I get the cipro/flagyll as I always need them. Then I top up with probiotics as well :)
