One bathroom, how do you manage?

My fiance and I are moving. He starts a new job next month. We are moving to a large city and have had trouble finding affordable housing in a nice area that doesn't involve him commuting over 30 miles in traffic.

We finally found an apartment complex that is in a great area, gets great reviews and is affordable. We were so excited, until they said they didn't have any 2 beds 2 baths available in the next 3 months. Only 1 bed 1 bath and 2 bedroom 1 bath. When we first started looking, my main criteria was at least 2 toilets! But now that finding housing has been so hard and we found a place we really like my fiance wants to know if we can forgo the extra toilet. If it makes me uncomfortable, he said we won't do it.

I don't know what to do. I haven't lived somewhere with one toilet except for when I lived alone. The mornings really freak me out if I am not doing well.

So those of you with one toilet, how do you do it? Am I over thinking this?

I lived in a house with one toilet and 3 kids. My kids understood that when Mom said, "Get out, I need to go now!!!" that it meant, GET OUT NOW!!! I feel so sorry for them growing up that way but what else can you do? When you have to go, you have to go. Just make sure your fiance understands that oftentimes, we are not like others and cannot "hold it" for much of any time at all. The best way I've been able to explain it is just to compare what we deal with to the stomach flu. The bowels wait on no one!

On the bright side, the fact that your fiance is so understanding about you being put in such a situation - really shows me that he probably truly does understand what you are dealing with. If that's the case, then I think it'll be ok. He's just got to know that it isn't his throne to sit and read on. Like I told my kids - use it and get out unless they wanted to hear me screaming as I came flying down the hall! :P

I am so grateful to have three bathroom, actually 4 but the 4th one doesn't have a toilet (weird eh but that's house the house was when we bought it, it's in the basement and I think it was suppose to be made into a mini-bar or something....anyways, that would suck to have only one toilet/bathroom.

Three of us have been living with one bathroom for many years. I wouldn't worry about the smell, my husband and son do their own damage and they are healthy. They understand that when I say I have to go, I have to go. I've never been shy around my husband and my son grew up with me so it all works out. They finish as fast as possible and almost always let me know when they think they may be in there for more than a minute or two in case I am feeling a bit of rumbling.

The item that really makes this works is an opaque shower curtain. On the rare occasions when my son is in the shower and I have to go right now, the shower curtain gives us both privacy. I just knock and tell him I'm coming in so that he stays in the shower until I am finished. It works much better than rushing a teenager out of the shower. He's not always thrilled with the smell but it goes away quickly. No one locks the bathroom door when they shower and we always knock.

It's only an issue if you let it be one.

(I grew up with one bathroom - 6 girls and a mom sharing one bathroom)

We had only one bathroom for my first ten years with this disease. It was difficult, but doable. The toughest thing was when we had overnight guests. In the complex we lived in, there was a clubhouse with a bathroom--so occasionally, if a guest was in the shower and I knew they'd just gotten in there and didn't want to make them get out because I was desperate to use the toilet, I'd grab my keys and run down to the clubhouse to use the bathroom there. I suggest you check whether your apartment complex has a clubhouse that's close enough to your apartment to be useful.

I generally tried to make sure that my husband and I got up at different times in the morning, so that each of us would have uninterrupted bathroom time. Sometimes that strategy worked, sometimes it didn't. Good luck!

I live in a pretty small 3-bedroom, 1-bath ranch with my two tween daughters and my ex-husband. It sucks--to be quite frank. I feel so bad for my daughters, because in the mornings they know to get out in a matter of seconds if I need them too. Not to mention, it ALWAYS smells. I have a ton of air freshner etc.., but I know it has to be bad. I do have the urgency issues too, which makes it even more bad.

I have this dilema.  My fiance has diabetes and his meds cause him to have D and then I have CD...at times we are both trying to see who gets there 1st.  Much of the time though I am able to site get the 1st expolsive part over then get up for 5-10 mins to allow him to go before I head back in.  In 2 years we are going to be moving back to RI where I was prior to moving out to oregon to move in with him.  We will have more ppl in the house there (grandfather, the 2 of us and his 2 boys..but there are 2 toilets (1.5 bath).  It can be rough at times but I have learned to adapt.  Currently on weekends there are 4 of us for 1 bathroom during the week 3 of us (his youngest comes over on days off from school incl the summer).

Keep looking if you can if not comfortable though never know what you might be able to find

I grew up in an independent house with 2 bathrooms, one bathroom in my parent's bedroom and the other downstairs and i used to hate to go downstairs for a loo during the midnite and my parents used to get cranky at me if i knock the door during midnite. It was so embarassing. Now, i moved out of my parents, my gf & me share the same bathroom since we have only 1 so, when i am in shower, she finishes rest of other stuff :)..some how, we are managing but when i think of having kids and as the family grows, its pretty much difficult to manage with 1. Hopefully, we can afford a big house with 3 or 4 bathrooms & bedrooms :).

My gf in college lived in 1 bathroom house. Before she knew I had crohns. She knew I pooped a lot though. There was a Marriott courtyard hotel down the street I'd hop in my car and use sometimes do it didn't seem like I pooped as much as I did. There were a couple of times when I popped in a bag in the backyard when she was in br or shower. The one bath thing still scares me. I have not visited my best friend in Seattle bc their house has one bath. Now we have 3 baths so we have a bit more room but my wife and I have never really had an issue needing to be alone to poop. Sometimes I think she's freaking nuts to stand there and talk to me while I'm on the can and detained I have to kick her out if the pain is too bad but as far as stink goes that girl can rip em with the best! Hehe.
