I had a great day yesterday with my daughter. We started to look at
locations for her wedding and had q wonderful time just being together. She is moving on Friday, so quality time with her is precious right now.
I wasn't feeling my best in the morning, but we still had a great day. By evening Howe er, I was in a ton of pain. I didn't sleep much and knew by this morning that I couldn't take the pain any longer. So off to the ER I go. Hours later they decided to admit me and put an NG tube in. Oh Joy. I have never had one put in while awake and don't want to do it again, EVER.
Basically, I have either a blockage or ileus. We will see if they can come up with a new plan to actually DO something other than CTscans. I'll keep you posted.

Zanne .. as I wrote in another post in my thread.. I'm sooo sorry you are in the hospital
I know that pain oh so well.. I'm hoping that the blockage goes away on its own and that you don't have to have any other emergency procedures
Please get better soon!!!

My heart goes out to you - and I agree NG tubes are horrid if you're conscious! I'll be keeping you in my thoughts and hoping for the best!

I am SO sorry to hear tha and after such a nice time with your DD. Really hate having a NG at any time so hope the relief it is giving you is worth the discomfort - wishing you a very speedy recovery.

Bummer, Zanne. Sorry to hear about
the latest. Glad you had the good time w/your daughter tho. Hey, next time they come at you w/an NG tube ask them to put you out for a short. A drop or two of Etomidate or Propofol should do the job w/o a hangover.

I think if they would have done the ng tube to begin with after your surgery, you wouldn't be back. I'm a huge believer in ng tube. done it awake many, many times, you just have to get past gag reflex and drink lots of water when it's going down your throat, but relief was always pretty darn quik. thats the trouble with lap surgeries, they don't do ng.

AG I didn't have lap. It was
open.
The NG tube is out now. The problem is I have the same thing happening as I did before surgery. They all want me to see the specialist in boston, but I can't get in until Oct. The PA actually asked me what I expected to get out of this hospital stay and why I came. Really! I expect not to go home curled up in a ball on my bed because of pain. I know they are stumped, but seriously, what kind of question is that.

Oh God, NG tubes. I had them try and get them in during 3 separate ER visits and they're a combined 0/10. Hopefully you can get some actual help, versus what seems like incompetent fools.

Zanne I'm so sorry that you had to go through all this and still have no answers.. and then to throw it back at you like that.. I've had enough drs with attitudes to last a lifetime.. fortunately not on this last go round

Well that PA is a dumb butt in my book. So how are you feeling today? I wish there were more tests they could run to figure out whats going on. October is way to far off. Maybe you could talk to them to see if they could help in anyway to get you in to see this doctor sooner?? Big hugs to you!

Wishing you a speedy recovery with "real" doctors looking at you who don't have an attitude. Since you are in one hospital, maybe your GI specialist can move you up as an emergency and see you now? How about
your primary care doctor referring you to another specialist - sometimes you get in faster with a doctor referral than doing it on your own.

Update: yesterday they were thinking about
sending me home but then my blood pressure dropped. Not really low for me, but it concerned them. I finally had a BM, but since then the pain has increased and no more BM, so I think I am blocked again. This isn't concerning to anyone but me. I am in a ton of pain, but they don't want to treat the pain because that will slow the bowels. While I understand that, I can't live curled up in a ball. I am so frustrated and just at the end of my rope. I know I will find the strength to fight this but right now I don't have it. I want something stronger and as much as I ask, I. Just am not being heard. Time to curl up and simper for a bit then maybe I will find the will to fight again. Having BAD day.

I have been released. I spoke to the surgeon on duty and it was like talking to a wall. So if I am going to be miserable I would rather be miserable at home. I will pick up my fight on Monday when my regular doctor's office
opens.

At least you will be in your own bed and have your pain relievers to take to make you more comfortable. Hugs and so sorry for the poor treatment you received. Hugs!

Zanne -
I am so sorry I missed this whole episode. I was at Hopkins for a follow-up yesterday so I was out of the loop for a while.... (there is the worrying for the entire day before, then the actual 5 hour round trip to Baltimore plus the appointment itself, then the celebration dinner afterwards when it turned out OK :)
I have been in your shoes a number of times and I NEVER was refused pain meds, even if they suspected a temp obstruction, because they could never see it, no matter how quickly they did the xray or CT. What idiots!! If you are blocked, you are blocked, and pain meds aren't going to change that. I definitely sympathize with the NG being put in while you are awake. It's sooooo awful.
I'm glad you are home, and I sure hope you have some great pain meds!
I'm not much help, but I have lots of sympathy ...

Zanne, so sorry you had such a bad experience at the hospital. I hope your regular doctor can help tomorrow. It seems inhumane the way some Drs. and hospitals treat people. To let people writhe in pain is horrible. I bet you some of these people would treat patients differently if they had IBD.

Could someone tell me how a NG tube helps a blockage? I saw that in another thread and I don't understand the premise behind it whatsoever

Zanne, I'm so sorry for you.
I'm wondering if your resection hasn't healed properly...?
I know it's so soon after surgery, but can't they do a scope or SBFT?
