Pretty sure I did the pred wean too fast

Doc took me from 40 to 25 while in the hospital (had been on 3 months). After 5 days at 25 he had me go down 5/week. Sunday was my last dose at 5.

When I look up the withdrawal symptoms, I'm the poster boy.

Live and learn right?

Did you have an infection or something? I know sometimes if that is the case something like this might not seem so strange. Otherwise that does seem like a pretty fast taper! But I am no doctor ha : )

I did, big mess with abscesses. This is day 4 of 0, the last two have been really rough. I figure at this point it's best to just ride it out.

Wow. Evil prednisone. Been there friend with infection only I was just about done a 3 month run on pred down to 10mg when infection put me in hospital for a month. Feel better soon I hope. I should add does your doctor know how you feel? I'd need a google refresher on pred withdrawl via google. Just hope it isnt going to hurt you or anything.

Saw the GI yesterday, the fast wean was at the behest of the surgeon who wanted me to go even faster.

Sure hope I can bounce back, a little googling says this could last 8 weeks...uuuuggggghhhh. I'm new on Remicade which is working wonders, start 6mp today, and if it wasn't for this crap I think I'd be doing better than I have since this started last year. So frustrating, basically I feel like I have the flu.

Oh well, nothing to do but power through.

I wonder why your surgeon wanted that. I know your heal slower but you'll heal, and if you needed it for the crohns then its a balance of good and bad, and obviously this is bad for you.

I had a fistula that created two abscesses. They installed a JP drain in each and put me on iv antibiotics. One of them closed up but the other kept going strong. I started on Remicade and they felt the pred would slow the response, and he wanted to try this first before going in to resection.

It did work, and the fistula has healed...but now this.

CrohnsPatient your going to have a really hard time healing an infection on 40mg of prednisone and there is a chance on that dose its just going to get worse. Infections can do things like perforate your bowel which is very bad.....up to and including death. I have read of a few people who also did real fast tapers due to infection. In 2003 my surgeon was the same way and was like we need to get you on some other immuno drug that isnt prednisone. He hated the stuff a lot more than my GI seemed to and said he sees a lot more people with infection on prednisone than other immuno supressants. Luckily I was down to 10mg at the time though when I had my emergency surgery so there was no withdrawl issues encountered.
